Those familiar with Hobart airport will know that there are no airbridges and all departing and arriving pax walk across the apron.

QF and JQ planes pull up on the left hand end of the apron (as you face the terminal from airside) and pax deplane and walk more-or-less straight into the far left hand side of the terminal building to the Qantas baggage collection area.

Virgin and Tiger pax deplane to a rather more circuitous walk, following a cordened off, painted trail to the far right hand end of the terminal, the old International terminal and the Virgin baggage collection area. A fluoro vested Virgin person (a "vestal Virgin") leads the procession.

Deplaning VA this afternoon, it was obvious that there were pax boarding another plane. This will be interesting, I thought, departing and arriving pax will mingle post scanning.

Not so! Our fluoro-guide turned LEFT and led us towards the Qantas end and she left us to make our way into the Qantas entry door. There, we found the inside cordoned off, but our lead pax cheerfully undid that with "We'll we'll let ourselves in, then!" and we were in the Qantas baggage collection area. There was no VA or QF people there, or any quarantine perople.

All the J pax left without need for collecting bags, so I didn't see what happened next.

* Did pax unfamiliar with the terminal wait forlornely by the QF baggage carousel? (!)

* Did others realise they should walk the 200 - 250m to the other end of the terminal to the VA baggage carousel?

* Were bags delivered to the QF carousel?

Obviously departing and arriving pax can't mingle after scanning, but strange all round. Yes this is a long post for a pretty minor 'event' :)

BTW the flight in J was really good. Loverly crew, nice mid afternoon snack (trout on potato salad, white chocolate icecream, very OK pinot gris ...).

Yes, but what right minded person would fly DJ (let's not call it VA)?

I don't want hosties that are more interested in painting their toenails than serving me.

What kind of right minded person uses the word "hosties" in the 21st century?

perhaps the OP should have waited around to find out if they were so curious?

Many people in their right mind.

When was the last time you flew Virgin?

Wow. Didn't think this would turn into a 'I hate Virgin' thread! Some people will take any opportunity to vent, I guess. :D

I've posted a number of times how I enjoy QF J at the moment. Virgin today was just as good. We are pretty lucky in Oz at the moment to have this competition going.

My apologies to clifford (as it's somewhat at his expense), but I almost fell off the chair when I read this response.

It'd have to be in the running for "Best One Liner" of the year award

Back on-topic. I have seen this possible intermingling and/or passengers locked out on the tarmac and unable to enter the terminal a few times. Anyone arrived lately at Mildura Airport for instance?
