I don't normally post about QF freighter flights, but on Friday 15 May 2020 during coronavirus, QF7442 is a scheduled super early morning departure from SYD the tiny distance to BWU (Bankstown). I assume it's for freight.

If so, why not put the freight on a truck and have the flight operate to whatever other capital such as MEL or BNE it's eventually headed for?

It's listed on the Sydney Airport site as an 'international' flight so even if the cargo requires a bond store or similar, my comment applies.

The economics of operating a plane this short distance must be suboptimal.

It shows up as headed to Brisbane but had to divert to Bankstown.

yeah you wouldn't have much fun doing a RPT flight in a Jumbolino (BAE146).. not the most spacious of aircraft.. but cute all the same.

Ah 146...
Flew that type once, AN days SYD - CBR, many moons ago now.
I think it was Kendall at that time.
My one and only flight on a 146.
Yes, it was a nice feeling, flying a 4 engined **small** plane.

I did a ton of miles in them in the West, with Ansett WA, including the run to Christmas Island - so there was some international flights. On that run, a section of the seats in the middle were taken out for a couple of large life rafts. They were certainly light years ahead of the F28's for being quiet and comfortable.
BAEdid bring out a 'quiet' freighter model, for use in Europe as it didn't break the night noise rules.

When I was working out of Kununurra, I knew the team at AWA very well. They would sit inside their office at the terminal waiting for the flights to arrive, as they could hear the F28's from miles away. Apparently when one of the 146s arrived, it was too quiet and they didn't hear it land, and didn't know it was there it until the pilot stuck his head into their office and asked if they could help out.

The joys of regional/remote living - Oh there's the plane coming in now, time to head out to the airport to catch my flight.

Kendall never operated the BAe146, that would have been East-West, and I don't recall the 146 being used all that often on CBR-SYD runs.

The only jet Kendall operated was the short lived CRJ200's which were used on Ansett's Capital Shuttle CBR-SYD flights.

The BAE146's that I caught out of Canberra in the mid 90s were Ansett branded - must have been the rebranded East-West jets. They did the run to Brisbane and Adelaide. Although there were a few times when they were out of action - we joked that BAE stood for Bring Another Engine.

I also remember catching the CRJ200s from Brisbane to Canberra a few times - usually with a rugby team on board which made it a bit squeezy; the days when Qld let the Kookaburras play in their local league.

Yeah they were Ansett branded, it’s been so long but think when Ansett brought East-West it remained a seperate company but operating as Ansett. That’s why I called them East West. A bit like how QantasLink has Eastern and Sunstate.

I could be wrong about that though

I'm sure we flew one of these, Perth to Broome in the early 2000's with Qantas.

I did quite a few flights with AN along the Qld Coast including CNS, TSV, HTI and then into BNE.

I thought the 146 was a great aircraft

Earlier on I didn't keep good records on which type of plane I flew on, but on QF I have flown them on ASP-AYQ, BNE-CBR, PER-BME & PER-PBO. Have also flown the AvroJet (same jet, different name) on LX several times and NW.

OT: Mine had AN flag on tail.
Could have been EastWest, dont know why Kendall sticks in my mind though.
