When QR first applied for OW membership in the early 2010s, they were also a “relatively small outfit” and hence didn’t catch the attention of QF who had and has veto powers. They didn’t even fly to Australia back then.
Look what has happened in the 13 years since.
It’s time QF abandoned the myopia and use their lessons from hindsight and respond appropriately to this application. ME airlines are capable of rapid, exponential growth in terms of aircraft and destinations. And it’s not even WY alone, it’s QF’s main adversary QR that is fully behind this which makes this even more important for QF to reject. If it was someone else sponsoring and driving this application then maybe it could slide through.
