I am heading to Scotland next February (yes I know it is winter) and am looking at car hire.

At the moment I will be travelling from Mallaig to Ullapool via the Outer Hebrides followed by a trip to Edinburgh.

Am I better off getting a hire car on Harris/Lewis for the time on the island, or one on the mainland beforehand to keep until EDI?

And any suggestions on a company to use?

Can't help with your exact routing.

But I had a car for over a week from Hertz picked up in Inverness last April and dropped off in Edinburgh after doing the NC500 etc and was not charged any one way drop off fees.

My wife wished she has of realised that the hire car was fitted with electric seat warmers at the start of our hire, rather than just at the end ;)

Two years ago we got an Avis rental from LHR to ABZ with no drop off fee.

I asked a friend who lives near Edinburgh who says that a firm called Enterprise Car Hire are good. she suggests you check the price for the ferry trip to the islands as a foot passenger versus bringing a car from the mainland on board. You can also hire a car on the islands, not sure what companies service them though.

She suggests for February that you pop into a petrol station and buy ice spray and an ice scraper for the windshield !

Her other tip is to prebook lunch at The Dome, 14 George Street - Georgian architecture in the ‘New’ Town part of Edinburgh ...gotta love that the Old town part medievel ... also its a very walkable city to get to all the sights, so no hire car needed there.

I did the drive from Mallaig to Ullapool last year - beautiful scenery - if you have any questions please let me know

Thanks. The plan is to drop the car off when we get to EDI and then walk/public transport for the few days we are there.

Thanks for that. We are going from Mallaig to Harris/Lewis then back over the water to Ullapool. So maybe not the route you may have taken! ;)

If you get the opportunity to drive out to Applecross from Strathcarron around the coast to Shieldag and Torridon do it. It is just amazing

While in Edinburgh....Afternoon tea at The Dome looks nice, see Jenners Department store and have tea at The Balmoral.
