Interested in flying to Melbourne, driving to Canberra and then flying home to Brisbane. Does anyone know of a car rental provider who doesn’t charge excessive one way fees? Not interested in relocation/standby arrangements.

It’ll be a rare provider that does that leg without a one way fee. I had to pay one for OOL-BNE recently!

Other than relocation, absent a major event in one location requiring multiple cars in the other, I think you’ll struggle.

Hopefully others can have more positive input input for you.

Doing a dummy booking, an AVIS one way fee could be ~$300 plus daily hire costs.

A dummy booking with MEL pickup and return next day to MEL quoted as $66. Returning to CBR next day was $360.

Amortising that over several days for the convenience factor I guess is the value proposition to consider.

A cheaper or zero fee obviously would be better!

Ouch $300.

OOL-BNE was $50 fwiw.
I just did CHC to ZQN and I think the fee was N$150 but we had the same car for a week. Some upcoming shorter hires in the US are US$100 ish I think.

Lines up near start of school holidays in Vic. Unfortunately that probably won’t help.

Rentalcars.com/au have at least one (unnamed without completing booking) supplier without a one way fee. Whether that ends up any better than a better rate plus fee I’m not sure- will also depend on which level car you want.

Economycarrentals.com seemed to have better pricing (cheapest was Sixt)

I've looked at a few rental.cars later and I find that unnamed supplier odd - has anyone had any issues with that and are they usually big players or little ones - slightly OT I know

Hertz must have a heap of cars that have done a one way from AKL to WLG as I just booked one going the other way and the base rate was $32.50NZ per day and no one way fee 🤣

Yes. In NZ generally a surplus of cars at southern depots. Notably WLG & ZQN. 66 in ZQN now
