As for the relative 'cheapness' of these awards, I have always assumed it was due to an agreement with oneworld.
o is used for stopover, but generally omitted; x indicates transit. Often fees/taxes are less with x's then with o's.
e.g. MEL-xSYD-oDFW-xLAX-MEL is a round trip to DFW with transits at SYD & LAX.
