OneWorld Connecting Flight Baggage Rules

Apologies if this has already been answered - I searched but couldn't find the answer.

I am flying from SYD to BNE on QF in Y (at 1100) and then BNE to DOH on QR in J (at 2240) on the same day of travel. Both are award redemption tickets booked separately (therefore different PNR and so on). Lowly Red (ie no) Status.

I have checked the OneWorld Lounge Access Policy and we can access the SYD DOM J lounge on the basis of the same day onward flight operated by a OneWorld carrier. Great start.

I did find that QF will not check my bags through to DOH as they are separate tickets (although my research suggests that it doesn't hurt to ask when checking in at SYD).

What I cannot find is what the luggage allowance will be for the SYD/BNE domestic flight.

I am hopeful that the baggage policy will be similar to the lounge access policy but I cannot find any reference towards this in all my googling. The OneWorld Baggage Policy comes up as "NOT FOUND".

As I can't find anything I fear that the baggage allowance for the SYD/BNE flight will be as per Qantas Checked Baggage (ie one checked bag at 23kg) but hoped that someone here could show me otherwise. Pretty please!

Your baggage allowance should actually be indicated on your e-tickets, have you checked that?

Since the tickets are on separate itineraries, there's no "most significant carrier" rule or anything like that, if that's what you're hoping for. The baggage allowances apply individually. These are not "connecting flights" as far as the airlines are concerned, they are completely independent bookings and thus bear no relation to one another.

This! Thanks so much …

The way I see around this is to cancel the award flight to BNE and buy a cheapie ticket then QF will honour my QR baggage allowance. Unless I’m missing something?

Yep. I'm planning to do the same thing.

Question for others who have done something similar. Do you just quote the rule or do they just know?

I don't think it works that way.

They should check your baggage through, but I wouldn't be expecting a boosted allowance on the domestic route when you have two separate itineraries.

If you can find an award seat on either QF or VA (depending on which program the QR award was booked through) the best course of action is adding the domestic leg onto the existing QR PNR, you'll then be guaranteed the QR allowance for all legs in the itinerary.

Some of them know, some of them don't. Printing out the agency connect page linked above is a good idea, although as you are P1 I can't imagine they would be difficult about it.

If the SYD-BNE is a separate ticket, you will have to abide by the ticketed allowance of that ticket for that segment - it does not matter how it is ticketed. The only time the QR allowance applies on the SYD-BNE is if it's one ticket SYD-BNE-DOH.

That is, if your SYD-BNE is 1 piece at 23kg and your BNE-DOH in J is 40kg, you will have a combined limit of 1 piece at 23kg as that is the most restrictive allowance.

This holds true regardless of whether the two flights are on two separate PNRs or on the same PNR.
