Hi All,

As I am aware the OneWorld RTW ticket costs 140k Qantas points in Y and 280k in J.

I understand that you have to pay for the taxes and surcharges,
and that of course this will be different for each trip depending upon each leg of the trip.

My question is: how much has everyone paid in there taxes and surcharges when claiming a RTW fare?

Just so I have a rough idea of costs - Feel free to share your trip details :)

Last year's 280K trip - taxes and charges were about $1300 AUD per person. This included BA fuel surcharges and the LHR APD so if you avoid BA and departing from London after a full stopover yours will be considerably less

I did a 140K Y trip last year with legs on QF, MH, JL, BA & AA. Taxes etc. came to just over $1300. This is probably at the upper end of the spectrum though as the legs on BA and to a lessor extent QF would have attracted high fuel surcharges. The taxes vary depending on the airline.. some (e.g. AA, LA) charge no fuel surcharge at all.

Note that the UK departure tax adds almost $150 to the price if departing the UK on a long-haul flight in economy. If flying anything other than economy, the price is almost $300!

This year will be my third 280k award, first time taxes/fines have come in under $1,000.

2013 9 sectors $1,400 - hit with APD @ LHR as connection was 26 hours
2014 8 sectors $1,300 - connection @ LHR was only 5 hours so shouldn't have been hit with APD but don't remember exactly
2015 12 sectors $900 - connection @ LHR 8 hours

Try to avoid LHR if possible to keep the costs down.

The UK departure tax only applies if the stopover is greater than 24 hours.

But if you are flying out of LHR, there's a good chance it'll be on BA, which means high fuel surcharges. So it may be a place worth avoiding generally unless you know what you're doing.

My 140k award was something like $1100 per person with flights on MH, CX, AY, AB and IB.

280k J going PER-SYD-JNB-WDH-JNB-CPT-JNB-DOH-AMM-TLV-AMM-DOH-PER flying QF, BA, QR and RJ. Taxes at just under $2k. The AMM-TLV sectors being flights of 68 miles make over 25% of that!

Was wondering why you didn't buy a revenue ticket for the 45 minute flight but looked it up and found out even in Y nearly $800 rtn

Yes...I was equally shocked when I saw that. I looked it up to see the price breakdown and was gobsmacked. Clearly the seats sell as RJ runs that route twice a day.

Thanks for all of the feedback and help.

So it looks as if the tax and surcharge costs are basically the same wether the you are in Y or J.

Meaning that you really start to save money when travelling in J.

Exactly!

award tickets in economy very rarely make sense, you might as well buy a cash fare. Star Alliance RWT in economy are about $2.4-2.5k for the same 5 stops and you get points...so maybe wait until you've got 280K per person and then redeem

On Another Note - How many stops are allowed on the 140k/280k RTW Oneworld Fares?

Also you can't transit through the same city more than twice. Transit being a stop of less than 24 hours.

We are doing an award biggie next year, HKG/BOS/JFK/LHR/HKG would we be better off $ wise going via CDG?

We changed one of our flights from LHR>JFK on AA to FCO>xLHR>JFK and saved quite a bit on taxes.

280K flights paid $980 in taxes from MEL>xHKG>DXB>xAMM>IST>LHR>FCO>xLHR>JFK>NRT>MEL
