I wonder if it was the painters or the airline itself - what is clear is this is no "mistake"!
 
I spoke today to a friend - a graphics designer, someone who does company logos, signage, etc. She said this was an impossible simple error. IE it, if it was true, was an intentional fault. Apparently it is not so simple as "forgetting a letter". All such company stuff is not a simple aggregation of letters - it is a complete logo, with font, etc included. Size and font ensured by "vectors", whatever that means. Her take on this is that if it is true, would require a deliberate sabotage.
 
If it isn't some odd PR thing, it looks like who ever did the paint overlay cut off the 'f' from the 'Pacific' sheet, then moved the 'Paci' across to cover the gap. It looks like the space between 'Cathay' and 'Paciic' is larger then normal.
 
Yes. I suspect this is PR. Otherwise the 'P' for Pacific would have been in the normal position and the rest of the word would have finished eaerlier than it should.
 
If this is a PR stunt (and I'm pretty sure it is), it has worked. This story has been covered all over the world during the last few days. Seems like a cheap way to spread awareness of your brand. ;)
 
I dunno. The old saying: if its a choice between a conspiracy (ie planned stunt) and a stuff-up, choose the stuff-up.

Anyone who needs to be aware of the CP brand (ie potential flyers to/in Asia) would surely be aware of the brand, and if not, would you choose an airline that can't even organise a paint-job? What else are they incompetent at?

Too many factors to make it a stuff up. The spacing of the words. The number of times the painter would have done the same thing. Where the words start and end. All lead to a single conclusion that this was PR.

It certainly got the advertising. Whether that translated into brand awareness or generated income is another issue. Some may think like you that something like this is unprofessional and indicitive of maintanence issue more broadly. I admit I hadn't thought of it in that context.
 
You are obviously not the cynical old codger that I am :)

I'm just presuming the PR department isn't in charge of engine maintenance. Heaven forbid if we drew the same conclusions based on the QF website :eek: Which is definitely not a PR stunt!
