So, I'm just thinking aloud on something here. I'm a frequent traveller who takes full advantage of QF's new smart technology, using my next gen checkin, q bag tags when checking luggage and just swiping my card on entry to the lounge. In other words, I go from arriving in the airport to arriving at the gate all without interacting with any QF staff. I'm taking it that by doing this, and not chatting to staff along the way my chances of an opup are pretty much nil? Anyone have any strategy / suggestion on this?

I suspect your chances of an opup have more to do with things other than your interaction with staff, however that does not mean you should not be nice to them, just in case;).

In general, your chances of an op-up on QF are pretty much nil irrespective of who you do or don't talk to; QF are famously stingy offering freebies of any kind (especially so if your status is below Platinum).

I would not say nil, I have had seven this year, it helps when you go to ports with less frequent services during school holidays!

I thought Op-Ups were allocated by Altea, and not by CSA discretion - so if you're up for one, you'll get it, whether it's at check-in or at the gate.

Paging QFCSA to the thread? :)

They can be done by a supervisor CSA ,I know a few AFF/FTs that can attest to that recently....

I had 3 in a row towards the end of last year in school holidays. 2nd opup in a row I was thanking my lucky stars and the 3rd one I literally pinched myself!

If you kick the totem pole as you check in, you get an op-up every time!

Try it!

The only op-ups I've ever gotten, is when I know the staff or you see then on a regular basis and are kind enough to remember you and give you a little bonus. So checkin in electronically defiantly reduces that!

I also wonder if the fact you pre select an exit row seat your chances of an op-up are reduced...

I would have thought that if you had an exit seat your chances of getting an OP up would be slightly increased as they then have a 'premium' seat free to OP up another.

This is just a thought with no actual first hand knowledge though.

Daniel

Operational Upgrades are done manually.

Altea can be used to produce a "Proactive Onload" report which provides a list of recommendations in order of a PAX's PCV, but other than by complying with any applicable Company Policy, there is no compulsion to use it.

No op ups on QF ever... OLCI, smart card and person check in - no Op Up ever!

I've had a number using the smart check-in. I will check in on- line as usual, but not print a boarding card. The upgrade just appears on your receipt when you scan the card at the gate.

I was op'd DRW/BNE yesterday. My travelling companion (Silver) was op'd - possibly because of linked PNR. The gent seated behind us - Gold, was Op'd and the Gold adjacent to him was Op'd.

One flight on the QF network in one day - 4 Op-Ups in J. Y was not sardined.

How many other flights on the QF network yesterday (and every other day) had PAX Op'd into J on DOM routes?

4 Seats in J (that I knew about) of 30 seats - not bad really. Is this a one off occurrence - I don't think so- I have had plenty of Op-Ups on QF as have many others. I dont believe pretty much nil is either fair or just.

I'm also pleased at your success rate but believe it is quite abnormal.

So me being OP'd yesterday, nlagalle today and countless others is abnormal? Please.

Just because some do not get OP UP's and others do, does not make some normal and others abnormal.

Given the amount you fly it may or may not be abnormal, but it is certainly deserved.
