Hi all,

Yes- OP-UPs are like a mirage for some and rarely happens i know.

But has anyone been OP-UP'd when a point redemption ticket?

Happened when I was flying SQ on their own point redemptions...

Any insight?

Yes, it can happen. Have experienced it myself.

Greater chance than revenue tickets? No idea.

I have had an Op up's to J on a QF trans tasman award flight (:D both ways !)
It was the first flight after I become Plat
That was also my last Op up :(

UpOp'd from QF Y to PE twice from Melbourne to LA on award ticket once with a family member who was on award ticket as well.

Also once from Y to J Christchurch to SYD on award. All times I was a WP.

I've got a cheap paid Y seat Melbourne to LA next week as a SG I'm betting I won't be third time in a row lucky on this route.

So yes they occur. Obviously higher status more likely

Been OP-Downed (?) on a J FF SYD-CBR.

Dragged my decently pregnant wife to the service counter in the lounge to make them feel bad as they reissued our boarding passes.

Took about 6 weeks to claw some points back for the downgrade.

Well I guess they were lucky it wasn't SYD-MEL ;)

I've had PE to J on MEL-LAX on a classic reward ticket a few years ago.. that was with no status (e.g bronze) so it can happen.

There's no exact methodology (afaik) to the Op-Up process. I would like to think "its being in the right place, at the right time". Only had it once and then when I wanted to test my lucky streak by flying the exact flight number, same sector and same day of the week but many months later ....... no op up LOL

Yep, Mrs MatF and I were op-up'd from Y+ to J from MEL-SIN on QF9 last year (classic award flight)
We were told of the change while in the F Lounge in MEL .. was a wonderful and greatly appreciated start to our trip :)

Sadly it was the only upgrade for the trip, including a denial for a Y -> J points upgrade on the final HKG-SYD revenue leg.

I've had J to F on a QFF redemption on Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong to Paris. No idea why but I didn't question it!

Yes, I booked my mum a J return ticket to HK with QF. On the outbound leg she got op-uped to F (she was QF Bronze at the time).

I was under the impression the ticket class purchased had an impact on the upgrade que... while I can't figure it out from my flights (I'm 50/50 with paid:award op-ups) - it does make you wonder where upgrade inventory stacks up VS paid classes.

Based on Status, then fare class.. Say if your a WP and have an X class fare, a WP with a Y fare will be considered first (depending on how many seats the need to upgrade).
This would also be based on if doing the upgrade would make either pax have split seating.
They won't upgrade 2 people if one one seat is needed.

Also 95% of the time the free upgrades (regrades or "op-ups"), are done due to a cabin being oversold and then having no no-shows.

During the summer holidays when the premium cabins are fairly light and Y is chockers and not many status members are travelling. Upgrades will be first done on points, then status, then status and fare class, then just fare class from higher cost to cheapest cost Y being the highest and X generally being the lowest..

I remember a flight a few months ago had about 40 oversold in Y, and NB and QF Club members were getting free upgrades to J from Y..

I hope that's not a typical Qantas upgrade - from J to Y ;)

Mrs Batesy and I recently. We were booked on a J Oneworld award. Both of us are SG with QF.
  • LHR-JFK with BA J-F op-upped at gate. When Mrs Batesy got the beep and red light at check in the gate agent said "we have changed your seats" to which I responded that I had booked the upstairs exit row and did not want to move. I then quickly asked if we were in F which was yes so I remaine quiet and too our new BP's for 4A & 5A.
  • SIN-SYD with BA op-upped at SIN premium check in. No commentary from the agent just handed over BP's.
Both great experiences and I took advantage of all the extras! Much bubbles and food consumed.
