I'm from the US and in Australia short-term (~6 mos.) on a 457 visa. I will be looking to travel domestically within Australia and have been thinking about opening a few credit cards for the QF bonus points. Here are the ones I have my eye on:

1) HSBC Woolworths Qantas Card (16k QF points opening bonus, $89 annual fee)

2) ANZ Frequent Flyer Visa (16k opening bonus, $95 annual fee)

3) Amex Qantas Ultimate Card (30k opening bonus, free roundtrip economy ticket, $250 annual fee first year)

A few questions:

1) Do I have any shot at getting a credit card with my residency status (can show proof of employment in Australia with $90k+ income)

2) How long do these bonus points typically take to post? For the Amex, when would I be able to use the free roundtrip economy ticket?

3) Are there any other cards which dangle opening bonuses that I am missing?

4) Will any of these cards show up on my US credit report? Mainly concerned about dinging my US credit score with new account openings.

You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to be able get a credit card here, this is the common criteria for most banks here.

Unless you have an introduction from your home bank or ask them to organize and Australian issued card, AMEX often do this.

You may be able to get Amex to put you thru their international connection as that is how I am doing the reverse to you as an Australian trying to get US cards.
Do you have a US Amex card? If so call Amex here in Australia as they tend to know which way is up in my opinion.Amex Ultimate is a generous point earning card.
