Optiontown add MAS

I am using Optiontown for my PER-KUL airasia flight ($72 upgrade + $3 membership fee...) and when I saw this post I thought "Excellent, Sister is flying MAS and I can upgrade her for her birthday!"

Tapped in her PNR.... $547 each way?! No thanks, not for a 5 hour daytime flight... Now, if they offered PJs in J I might reconsider

I was trying to work out how much they charged for the upgrade as it is not on Option Town Site. Too Much

Just checked for my forthcoming flights on MAS and for SYD-KUL the upgrade would be $530 and for KUL-CGK would be $92. Probably more than I'd be looking to spend, but more reasonable than the previously quoted price from Perth.

Do you know what sort of Y ticket you were upgrading off.

I did a dummy booking on the MAS website but when I read the terms and conditions it said that the ticket was not upgradeable. I don't know if this includes optiontown upgrdes as well.

Has anybody tried the Optiontown upgrade on MAS and been successful?

It appears that the Optiontown option with MH seems to have ended.
Reports coming in that upgrades are not possible,
prob due to impending entry into OW.

But AirCanada now on the OT site...

The whole thing sounds like a bit of a scam to me (how could it not be?) and I would have severe doubts that a quality star alliance carrier such as Air Canada would have anything to do with this scheme.

Yep HKT to KUL for about $40. Pretty empty flight in the end - only 2 others in business.

Not a scam at all, I have used on Air Asia and MH. It would be good to see a few other airlines join the scheme instead of flying with empty business class seats.

Has there been anything official released to confirm the departure of MH from Optiontown?
The website is extremely slow today, however last time I checked there was still reference to MH on there. I would be spewing if the partnership were to end...

Haven't seen any official release,
but MH logo has been removed from OT site for over a month now,
and no reference to OT on the MH website anymore.

My own experience is twice no go for KUL-LHR and SYD-KUL on separate occasions in last 2 months.
Safe to say you can start spewing....

But Malev have been an Optiontown partner for quite a while

Malev's relationship to QF is slightly different from MH's to QF, as QF is MH's sponsor into OW.
Probably didn't phrase my original comment very well.

Anyways, here is the reply I received when I queried Optiontown:

Dear deluxeflyer,

Thank you for contacting Optiontown and your interest in Upgrade Travel Option (UTo).

We would be glad to help you with your upgrade request for your flight on Malaysia Airlines, however, currently Malaysia Airlines has decided to not offer UTo on some of their flights. However, please note that the availability is dynamic and may change at any time. So, if you would like, you could enter your PNR details on Optiontown or write to us on [email protected] and we will automatically inform you when UTo becomes available for your booking. Thanks again for your interest. We hope to serve you soon!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions. In case this email does not fully answer your question, or you would like to contact us for any reason, you can also get immediate assistance by calling one of our Customer Care numbers at:

I think it's a bit dodgy that Optiontown are still advertising that MAS are still with them when they definitely aren't anymore. The scheme wasn't a scam, though, because I have successfully used it on one occasion last year and so have my family. The relationship between MAS and Optiontown ended at the end of October for any new bookings. However, if you had paid for an upgrade prior to the end of October for flights beyond that, I believe they are still valid and MAS will try to honour them (pending availability, of course).
I don't think the termination of this relationship was a condition of MAS joining OneWorld. I believe it's because MAS feel that they no longer need Optiontown once they have access to a larger audience as a result of joining the alliance.
