If someone seriously swaps their home phone/mobile/internet service to the coughpy Optus service just for frequent flyer points, I think I may have to shoot them.

Optus becomes a Qantas Frequent Flyer | The Australian

OPTUS today launched another key plank of its marketing program, announcing it will join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

The initiative - which will be promoted when it officially launches later this year with a co-operative marketing campaign including advertising to be created by M&C Saatchi - will see Frequent Flyer members gain rewards points when they purchase any Optus consumer or small business product.

The actual launch date and details of the rate at which customers will acquire points remains under wraps but Optus will be a key Frequent Flyer partner, alongside companies such as Woolworths. Four hundred brands in total are part of the program.

The staff at QF who negotiated this partnership clearly have never had to get onto the phone to Optus for a support or billing query.

They are an absolute joke of a company.

If their service was free I still wouldn't use them, even if they will be awarding QFF points soon.

Admittedly, I will benefit from this with an Optus mobile service for work, but I desperately want the contract to end so I can get off it!

I had no issues using Optus landline and internet for many years until I moved house and they couldnt provide access at my new house.

How often do you have to call customer service though? I've had an iiNet account for 5 years and have never called them for billing or support - I make the changes through the web portal.

I just had a look at Optus fixed broadband plans (all my other telecommunications needs are supplied by work) and they are very competitive with iiNet and Internode now.

It can't be worse then vodafone could it?

Unfortunately the only home internet providers for where I live are Optus and Telstra. Optus was the cheaper of the two, and I've had no problems with them so far. Look forward to going back to iinet when I move later this year though.

As for mobile I've been with Optus for a while now. They've always offered to upgrade my contract early so I've not bothered to shop around. In fact my current contract will be the first contract that I've ever finished with Optus. :p It finishes in December, hopefully in time for the upcoming iPhone 4S... I might have a look at one of the other carriers to see if I can get a better deal. :)

I had nothing but trouble from Telstra for months after I set up a small business at home. I couldn't wait to get out of the agreement and an Optus salesman turned up at the right time and got the best deal in the world. Well history shows that it took no less than about 8 hours on the phone and two letters to the TIO to finally get Optus to install what they promised and charge what they promised (and refund the difference).

I've still got about 10 months to go out of a 2 year contract but I'm not sure I can handle the pain of switching back as I'm sure it will be nearly as bad.

And on topic I'd bet there are no rewards for existing suckers... er I mean customers.

Having dealt with support etc at Telstra, Three, Vodafone, TPG, Optus they are all as bad as each other.

(iprimus was alright though - even if I was not a customer with them, but they did send me a bill once )

I think its generic to say someone somewhere has had issue with all telecommunication providers at some point!

The best thing to note that Qantas is trying to increase its brand awareness through other means. With there FF program having sooo many members it will be hard not to see this as a win-win for most people .

I wonder if Virgin Mobile will stay with Velocity, seeing as they are an Optus reseller :p

Seriously though, 12 months to go on my contract, can't wait to get off the coughpy Optus network.

Same! My contract is up in three months, though Im hoping to stick it out till the new iPhone comes out... They were ok when I first joined, but have got worse lately...

I've already sought clarification on this, Virgin Mobile is sticking with Velocity :p They are a completely separate company after all (Even though owned by Optus).

Pretty sure that the Open Network leaves its droppings all over NextG, well at least in Tasmania anyway ;)

Another very unhappy Optus mobile user. I survived on their network for 8 years using a Nokia. But once I upgraded to an iPhone 3, noticed serious deficiencies in their network. At home I am lucky if I get 1 bar on 3G and it often defaults to 2G, which is little better. Finally I rang them and they advised there were 3 blackspots in my area, and they had no plans to do anything about it. About to make the move to Telstra to get a network that works. Broadband cable, Foxtel, and landline are all with Telstra, and everything works perfectly. Had good customer service from them also. :)

Respectfully, I disagree.

I currently earn QFF points via my mobile phone contract and look forward to the possibility of earning points from my home phone and work phone land lines.

When I purchased our new business earlier this year I spent 12 hrs (no BS) over 4 phone calls to simply get the telephone account change from the previous business owners name to my name.

In summary, Telstra stuffed up the names, the billing address, the contract terms as well as transferring the previous owners home account all into my name so that they no longer had ownership of their home phone, foxtel etc.

I got so fed-up that I requested all business lines changed to Optus over an online facility, made 3 phone calls to double check details and it was all done as per my request and I've dropped my phone bill by 50%.

So after leaving Telstra for 3mths, I still get calls from their customer service team telling (weekly) me that I'm a current valued Telstra customer and based on my spend I can access a new product that will reduce my bills. They just can't seem to get their act together when it comes to my (former) accounts with them.

With my experiences, I'm glad to be away from Telstra and have been very happy with Optus (for 8+ yrs with my mobile phone).

Optus was great when iphone first reached australia, when vodafone's network started coughping out, everyone moved to optus. Now optus's network is coughping out, and my friends on vodafone are getting faster 3g connections than me!

Hopefully everyone will move off the optus network again so i can stay and collect the FF points!

Optus' network fell in a heap the day the iPhone 3G was released.

I was an Optus customer for over 10 years and was more than happy. I queued up the day MNP came in to move from Telstra to Optus, and spent many years as a happy customer.

I queued up at the Optus store to get my iPhone 3G. It was woeful by that afternoon. I then changed to Vodafone after getting out of my contract via the TIO (I Couldn't keep a 3G signal... within 200m of a 3G tower in the middle of Melbourne CBD) . Spent 6 months happy there, then got on a Telstra Family & Friends plan as it was super cheap. Since then they added 1GB data to my plan, and I get $400 of value for $39 a month, with a $15 a month handset repayment, and no contract.

Voda's network started to fall to pieces as people managed to get out of their Optus contracts and move. It was like clockwork (and even more frustrating dealing with the inept morons at Optus Technical Support, if you can call them that, when you work in the Mobile industry and they can't even take a fault report from you outlining the exact issue, and instead say 'oh it sounds like your SIM is faulty') as customers left en masse, Voda crumpled.

And don't get me started on 3 and their issues (I kept roaming in the middle of the CBD on a 3G handset).

<tongue_in_cheek>I'll stay on Telstra. Everyone else off my fast network ;) </tongue_in_cheek>
