Alrighty, guys. Here's the lowdown from a man who just scored a couple of brownie points from the boss lady for her cheap, slumming it birthday trip to Singapura for her 40th.
ParkRoyal Marina Bay. It's a bit rough around the edges, it's stuck in a hell of a part of the city. You can lose your cash around here all too darned readily (believe me, even after the 20% Accor+ discount, Raffles Courtyard just about cleaned me out on Sunday arvo... after 6 hours and heavens knows how many coughtails).
From getting out of your car at the kerbside, ParkRoyal have you covered. The valets are there on the spot to catch your cases, check in on 4th is dreamy to walk up to. Across the beautiful bridge, above the gardens, and with views into the lovely, lovely little "wicker" bubbles they have as seating alcoves for Peppermint and Portman's Bar. We were attended to at check in immediately, with an apology that they couldn't upgrade us (hell, I wasn't expecting one, I don't have any previous experience of ParkRoyal) and placed in a room overlooking Marina Bay, with complimentary breakfast, and a private arrangement for cake and photos (and massive box of chocolate truffles!) on my wife's birthday itself.
The room was immaculate. I went around. And yes, I could find a few little patches of silica moulding in the bathroom that could have been sharper. Really? That's what I'm up against!? Utterly lovely, all round. The lady even thought it was a suitable environment to go modelling her QF33 pyjamas in. Cloud9 didn't think it was appropriate for him to model any pyjamas until he loses the last of his tummy... So maybe in 2034.
Breakfast at Peppermint was a very definite 8/10 from me - and believe me, I'm hard to please. Especially after an epic dinner after arrival at Toku Nori in Telok Ayer (Hi, Aeldra!!! This lady isn't just the chef, or the owner, she's also just absolutely freaking lovely - and as I said to her privately, if she expands to Melbourne I want to buy in - I'll drop a review on Toku Nori separately over the weekend. It's a personal mission to get as many Aussies as I can through its doors... Hmmm... Lounge crawl calling?), Peppermint had a fair bit to live up to. No danger, as I would say in Glasgow. The Pau and Hargow were topper, as were the mini muffins, sushi, choice of breads, and fair layout of other delicious goodies... Nobody mention the 500g or so of longan and lychee I had... Coffee's nothing of note by Aussie standards - but it's from one of the better machines (if there is such a thing), so it was drinkable.
We had the lady's 40th dinner in Peach Blossoms, and it was just pure theatre from start to finish. The gastronomic menu was to die for, the wines were amazing, and it's just such a lovely space. Even with a large corporate dinner going on in the next room, we could barely even hear them - and there wasn't a door in between. Throw in two extra little courses as a happy birthday for the girl, and my word... it was less than half the cost of Butcher's Block at Raffles, last month! Value for money? Don't think I've had better value in my life.
If you're in Singapore, and Pullman Orchard is booked out? Well, I won't speak for you, but I'll be here!
