Can you knowledgeable folk please confirm I am reading this correctly and have nothing to worry about. I am departing NZ in March and my passport expires in May.

as per immigration NZ : for one month beyond the date you intend to depart NZ, if the issuing government has consular representation in New Zealand that is able to issue and renew travel documents

Cheers CM

I'd be more worried about the the rules of the destination country. Some countries require up to 6 months' passport validity before they let you in.

I'd be getting a new one. usually you need 6 months or more remaining on your passport. That's my understanding.

EDIT: Russ … you wizard.

Yes, OP has not said where the onward flight is going.

I would get a new passport now, regardless. It lasts for 10 years.

Sorry folks I am only returning to Australia after a brief holiday. Sounds much safer to get a new passport.

So it's an Australian passport and you are returning to Australia?

Yes that is correct, I was just concerned about the 6 months that some countries require. I thought maybe Oz and NZ would not enforce that.

You don't need 6 months validity to leave NZ (why would they care? you're leaving) and you don't need it to enter Aus on an Aus passport either.

I think I coughed this up, I was worried about entering NZ with less than 6 months left on Passport

Maybe delete the thread and start again :)

I'd be surprised if NZ required 6 months on an Aus passport, given that once you're in the country you can stay indefinitely (even if your passport expires), but don't know for sure.

For export from Aust. Assuming you are on an Australian Passport.

Do I need six months validity left on my passport before I can travel from and then re enter Australia?

You passport is valid from the date it is issued until the date it expires, and you can use it throughout this period subject to meeting the visa and immigration requirements of the countries you wish to visit or transit.
Some foreign governments require visitors to carry passports with at least six months validity beyond their planned stay, and you may be refused entry if you do not comply.

As NZ does not require 6 months Validity you will be OK. When you exit NZ to Aust they also check (and care) - the passport only needs to be valid to return.
On entry to NZ You will need a return ticket or itinerary as Aust Passport holders can stay longer than the time left on your current passport.

NB If something were to happen to you, like falling off Mt Cook or being a little too close to a glacier and you were unable to leave NZ before your passport runs out you would need to get a new one issues from the consulate in NZ. Its not difficult but can take a few days...

Happy travels
