I booked a Classic Award Mia-Lax with AA in J for 36000 (x2) points about a month ago. At the time, the only options were J or F (which I didn't have enough points for). Took J, but the only time was leaving 8.10am arriving way too early to check in to accommodation at the other end. Just had another look on the QF site, and now there are heaps of other options in Y or F (no J) at a more suitable time. It is possible that I may have enough points by Sept to book into F, but right now, the time of 11.05 in Y looks more appealing than 8.10am in J. I have heard that J on AA is not that great. Can I change this booking without penalty or not?

Stick with J???

Fee schedule

There is a cancellation fee of 5,000 QFF points each award or if you want to make changes the change fee is 3,500 QFF points each award.

I did this earlier this year (changed from Y to J when seats opened up) and it cost me 3500 per pax

So the change fee is 3500 per pax. Unlikely then to go to F. Therefore the question is now, stay in J at 8.10am or revert to Y at a more reasonable hour?

This AA J will be good but not great. Depends how much you value the points as well.

That is entirely up to you.

I would keep the earlier flight and see if you can check in early at your hotel on arrival.

If you're on the 0810 flight MIA-LAX, it should be a 777. (At least it was when I did this flight a little while back). The aircraft comes into MIA from somewhere in the caribbean, so it's sort of 'international configuration'.

The J cabin on the 777 is fine, with AA's sort of 'boxy' set-up and the slopey bed.

If I was you, I'd be staying on that flight. Certainly better than any 767 alternative or 738 with stop in DFW. Where are you staying in LA? In my experience, most LA hotels have no problem with early check-in (provided they haven't been totally booked out the night prior).

I would most certainly not be doing a transcontinental flight on AA in Y !!

Ok, that's settled then. Unless a better time comes up in J, I'll stick with what I already have booked.

Thanks for the advice.

There are very limited 3-class flight options on the route you are taking, so its most unlikely there will be any other flights with a J cabin so no chance of a J award opening up. So stick with what you have and enjoy the international J seating and trans-con J service. And if too early for hotel check-in just find a coffee shop to hang for a while.

Amen to that.
Avoid the masses with their humongous amounts of carryon at all costs!

I forgot about the lack of included checked baggage. Everyman and his dog will be going for the overheads in Y. Ewwww.

Or a bar ;)
