G'day all,
Happy to report my wife and I had the best nights sleep on QF79 - and no crook neck! It was closer to a 9 hour flight but it was only half-full so pretty much everyone got to lay down and have a good nights sleep.
I'm led to believe QF79 is a 3-times a week service, but our original flight was "UN1" (cancelled), and only by checking our booking on qantas dot com did I figure this out a few weeks ahead of time -- we could have quite easily turned up at the airport with no plane to catch!
The Qantas staff were apologetic and nice about it, I managed to get our award booking date changed to the same flight (QF79) departing on the Friday instead of Sunday, and JAL codeshare on the way back NRT-SIN then QF from SIN-PER (14 hrs) - the Qantas staff didn't have this option on their computer, but I did my homework on qantas dot com before calling them and they called me back later and said OK.
I tried to stretch this request into a stopover in SIN but they wouldn't have a bar of that, they said I was welcome to cancel my award flight and try and rebook, which would be impossible, but I still think we did well not to get re-routed via the alternatives provided: via Cairns or Ayers Rock!
For next time I'll be interested to know if one can claim award flights on JAL? Its entirely possible with this JL-QF code-share deal QF79's days might be numbered (hope not). I'm sure local tour operators and qantas want to bring in japanese tourists, and direct flights are big plus.
BTW the in-flight entertainment was "are you being served?" which I found particularly amusing, even if it was lost in translation!
Cheers,
Dan
