Sorry, my first post means I can post a proper link to the story

Will this mean you still need to go through online checkin process?

A simple search for RFID got me this thread dated the same day as the news article you posted, however there have been earlier threads on the subject, they’re just a little harder to find:

The implementation of the RFID chips is yet to be seen, but chances are you’ll still need to check-in in some form. The new card/chip just means you wont need to print out a paper ticket, or keep your phone handy, you’ll simply swipe your card instead.

Air New Zealand already has a system in place that is much the same.

All of this new technology garble goes way over my head.

As frequent flyers can we still have a printed boarding pass?

Hmm, How about Qantas run a project to reduce the amount of time I spend standing in an aerobridge waiting to board a 737......

Easy ... be at the gate before boarding commences (if you have no status, pre-allocate row 25) and you can be amongst the first to board.

Or wait until you get that personal "Final Call" and stroll down the aerobridge like you own it (not recommended if toting two pieces of carry-on).

Could involve a bulk purchase of electric cattle-prods...:lol:

May get a discount if they purchase the cattle tags with the RFID chips at the same time! Left ear for Plats & Golds, Right ear for everyone else.

What an incentive to maintain status :p. A downgrade means you undergo the van Gogh/Chopper Reid ordeal.

I always try to stand into the seat to let others past while i put organise my stuff. But if i keep one foot in the aisle area, usually do this for balance while lifting stuff up, the people will stop and wait. So one thing would be to teach people they can actually walk around in these situations. Unless they are some of those people who just have to wheel their bag on the aircraft. Those people need to be taught to stop being lazy and pick up the luggage (except the rare infirm person). That would also speed up the boarding process as they wouldn't be stufing around putting down the handle once they get to the seat.

Thanks, i learnt something here. I always thought of him as being Reed, Reid never even occurred to me.

Strewth talk about stuffing it up completely. It is actually Read. I must've misread it somewhere. ;)

I couldn't risk having an ear tag. I've got bad eyesight.
