Philippine Airlines is advertising business class fares between MEL, SYD and BNE to or from MNL at US$1058 - US$1067 one way:
Philippine Airlines :: Everyday Madness Business Class
Recently I have seen similar deals from travel agents of roughly A$2200 return.
Be careful which route you book.
SYD - MNL - SYD is the best deal as the route has PR's B773ERs with excellent business class seats at a 15 degree angle. I find them comfortable. the airline serves a three or four class evening meal ex MNL and a good lunch ex SYD.
The MEL route is now back to the elderly (15 year plus old) A343s that only have recliner seats which I do not find overly comfortable. However unlike QF you don't have to change in SYD to get to MNL.
The BNE, PER and DRW flights are A320s with J seats with minimal recline. One AFFer has reviewed such a flight with accompanying photos.
All these points notwithstanding, given that MNL has a very large number of connecting flights to HKG, SIN, ICN and a host of other cities such as NRT, KUL and (less frequent) DPS these deals can be quite a good way (particularly ex SYD) of a less time sensitive passenger using a 'combination' fare (economy on the last leg to say HKG). There are four terminals at MNL NAIA airport: PR uses T2 (most international airlines other than PR use T1).
