While not as cheap as QF's $410 return from SYD to SIN through www.expedia.br, PR has announced a special on sale until 23 October 2013: MEL or SYD to MNL return including taxes and charges: A$753 return in whY. Travel is from today until 7 December 2013. I do not know if this is 'forward' travel for return tickets: the publicity does not explain that.
A one way whY fare is A$407. Maximum stay is six months for a return ticket. These fares do not attract Mabuhay Miles points, but on previous occasions, sometimes these points are still credited due to a possible bug in PR's software.
Typical return fares being charged by PR prior to the sale were $840, $900 or $990, rising to $1020 - $1050 if one left a booking until a week or so prior, so $753 return is quite a saving given the relative lack of nonstop flights on these MEl and SYD to MNL routes.
Strangely, BNE and DRW are excluded despite each having a combined three days a week PR flight to MNL.
PAL has switched to mostly using A330s from MNL to both MEL and SYD, although its B773ERs still make appearances, particularly to and from SYD. The A343s seem to have been withdrawn from the SYD and MEL routes: they have 38 fewer seats than the A330, which in turn at 302 seats is 68 seats smaller than the B773ER.
PR is the only airline offering nonstop MEL - MNL flights (3x week) while it competes with QF between SYD and MNL, with PR 4x weekly and QF mostly 4x weekly, down to 3x weekly in less busy times but with additional QF flights during the busiest December and January peak season dates.
