Last month my Rewards Maximiser card was changed to a Platinum credit card by Amex. They told me in the letter that I'd now get 1.5 points for each $ spent on the card. I just checked online and for some strange reason I'm not getting the 50% bonus for all the transactions. It seems to be completely random which ones get it and which ones don't (some are same place, same day, same card used but only one transaction gets the bonus). Some transactions only get 25% bonus and for one $98 I got only 19 bonus points (around 20%). But all show up as "Platinum Credit Card bonus points" in my account.

I'm really starting to have enough of Amex. First, I'm never targetted for any of their promotions and then they don't even credit the points correctly for the simple Platinum Card bonus.

Has anyone else seen this in their Plat account?

Have you had any refunds on your account - Amex dont credit out 1.5xvalue - they just reduce your accrual of points on subsequent transactions:

1 Jan spend $1000 - earn 1500 points

2 Jan refund $1000 - reduce points by 1000

3 Jan spend $1000 - earn 1000 points

Net spend = $1000, net points = 1,500

I've noticed that happening a bit too, but then my refunds never have the bonus points removed (ie, only 1 point for $ is subtracted) and there is never an adjustment on future transactions as simongr suggests.

As you say - it's completely random, but I've been ending up ahead so haven't worried too much.

Anyone else having similar experiences?

As per others experience, I have only had this happen when there has been a refund of some sort on the account. It all nets out in the end.

Around the date of the changeover from Maximiser to Platinum I had 5 transactions showing 0 bonus points. I contacted Amex rewards and they put through the 0.5 pt bonuses to correct it straight away. Since then all of mine have posted correctly so I just put it down to a glitch with the changeover date.

The same thing happens when fraudulent charges are credited back to the card. AMEX MR will not reverse points earned due to said fraud, they simply stop awarding you bonus points until the shortfall has been made up.

While I did indeed have a few refunds this does not explain why the bonus points are all over the place. Some 0 bonus points, some 20% bonus, some 25% bonus and some 50% bonus. I would think that if the refund occurs then there would be zero bonus points until the balance is even again and then the 50% bonus should continue. But that's not what's happening on my account. Just random boni that don't make any sense.

While I did indeed have a few refunds ...
Have you done a complete reconciliation?

i.e. Have you checked to see if:

<total bonus credit received> * 2 = <total purchases> - <total refunds>

I know it's weird but it always seems to balance out eventually. As to why it'd done that way, I do not know! (Maybe Amex had an adventurous system designer ...)

Its a very strange way of accounting for these reversals. Whilst I understand it will all total up at the end it make if difficult to follow.

My "platinum accelerator" points have stopped posting.

They said my anniversary for my platinum credit card was April (when in fact it is August and it is my gold card anniversary which is April). As such I had already spent 100,000 since last april accordingso would not get anymore bonus points, when in actual fact have only spent 70,000 since August on the platinum card. I am now out at least 11,000 points on my last 22000 spend.

Rang them up, they said they would look into it. I wonder if they confuse peoples anniversary dates often if they have multiple cards?

Just a follow up on this...I have rang amex 3 times re: this issue (incorrect anniversary date listed for card so points not posting ....and they said back-office are looking into it still)??? How long can this possibly take. It is now approaching 2 weeks

And another follow up - 1 week later (now 3 weeks)

Still missing my bonus points despite not spending 100K pa. They still have the dates confused from 2 cards contributing to "New" ascent. Even sent me a letter (and clearly didnt take my point...again using a anniversary date for a gold card and not the platinum). Am quite peeved. Made a formal complaint. I figure if I am going to spend $295 for a platinum (cobranded professional card) which they charge me for in august each year I should get 1.5 points per 100,000 from august....when I have now only spent 70K.

Does anyone know any other tricks into how to make amex listen. I have NEVER had a problem with them like this before and i have been with them for a decade. It seems I am talking to a brick wall.

Hi,

I had a similar problem and one phonecall to MR and then a two day wait for a call back rectified the problems.

Then the points posted as usual.

Perhaps ensure you are talking to "platinum desk" before commencing discussion of problem.

Finally an end (of sorts) to my bonus points drama today...

Received a letter stating..." due to the changes in the rewards program by Qantas, your anniversary date for your Platinum Bonus for the first $100,000 spend on the card has been changed to April 19th".

So they changed my anniversary date from august to april and didnt tell me (considering i didnt opt for the qantas option as well this irritated me further). Still the issue of me having pushed $22000 through the card on a transaction that missed out on bonus points as a result of this anniversary change was not addressed.

They did however as a "good will gesture" credit 5000 points to my account.

still irritates me...changing anniversary dates...has anyone else been caught out with this?

I have since dumped this platinum cc.
