Guys, I will be travelling to Malaysia and Thailand next week. In Malaysia there is 50% offer dining which requires Amex Platinum card. Do you think with PlatEdge, I am entitled to that offer?

How about other Amex Platinum offers from other countries, does PlatEdge qualify?

Cheers

The answer is probably not but for one, I'm not sure they would recognise the difference if they dont have an equivalent "discount" platinum card

Answer is probably not, and also that an Australian Platinum Charge may not cut it.

When I had an Australian Plat Charge I was denied benefits in Singapore (similar dinner/nightlife promos) as it was not a Singapore issued card

Thanks burmans. Is PlatEdge one of Amex platinum cards? I am aware that PlatEdge holders are entitled to Platinum services such as concierge, complementary insurance etc.

Hi moa, okay so I have an inferior Platinum card (sort of Fake Platinum).

As for your experience in SG, isn't it because of T&C probably stating that the Amex must be Singapore issued cards? Although I understand that this may apply similarly in Malaysia. But even you have the real Platinum, it might be denied as well, if it is Australia issued Amex.

Guys

I just called Amex Platinum CS, and she confirmed that any Amex Platinum not issued locally, won't cut it. A lot of offers are for local Amex only. Little bit disappointed, I thought Amex is a global card especially the Platinum ones.

Guys

I just checked that PlatEdge is entitled to Amex Select program which offers entertaining and dining experience globally. I saw some Select offers in Malaysia, it might work.

It does depend on the offer. Can be any card, can be limited to certain colours or styles. Can be limited to certain countries too.

For example a few years ago I used my plat amex cc to get a 25% discount at a certain store that offered the discount to amex card holders.

I know that I've been eligible for local AMEX offers in the past on shopping and dining. The discounts are manually applied by the merchant at point of sale who don't seem to care whether you have a local or Australian AMEX; I got the impression that so long as it's an AMEX it's good for the promo. Same with VISA offers.

Hi Keith, is your Amex, PlatEdge or other Platinum cards? We have conflicting info here, but I think the offers you received might be in regard to SELECTS scheme which if I read the T&C, only says about Amex holders - not even platinum.

Like Keith, my experience is vendor dependent.

You won't get 10x points for shopping in Ion Orchard, but DTF may give you the free Xai Long Bao. And CK are pretty keen to give the discounts even if you don't have the same bank's card, if you buy enough.

Don't mention it until they do, and then act surprised if its an issue!

I have, and have used all 3 (Charge, reserve, edge). No one notices the edge on the edge...

Well it's got Platinum written on the right hand side, and its the same platinum colour as THE Platinum card. Personally I think this is a YMMV situation, sometimes it will work, sometimes it wont.

I was eligible with either the AMEX Platinum Charge card or the Platinum Credit Card (now known as the Reserve). However, IIRC the promos I got were product agnostic and all AMEX cards were eligible, that is, you just have to charge your purchase to an AMEX. I got discounts at ION in Singapore as well as a few different places at the Pavillion in KL to name a few. Refer to the T&Cs of your particular promo I guess?

I recently had a trip to KL and stayed at the Shangri La KL and had dinner at their chinese restaurant. I had completely forgotten about this so I didn't ask the waiters upfront but half way through the meal, I remembered my friend talking about something offer from AMEX platinum so I quickly checked the website and found this:

It didn't work and I had to cop the bill of around ~$500 AUD equivalent. I didn't think it was expensive at all at the time of ordering but after seeing that I had a 'chance' to have paid $250 instead, I started feeling a bit sick...

I wonder if it will work if we showed an AU Plat charge card??

The T and Cs are slightly ambiguous, but seem to imply that the card just be issued by a certain bank, likely why you were declined.

The T and Cs are not even slightly ambiguous, and are quite explicit about which cards are eligible.

I think there's also something different about the situation in Malaysia due to how their cards are issued. In Australia, the AMEX cards are clearly distinct from the bank AMEX counterparts, in terms of how the card is branded etc. However in Malaysia IIRC, I think the actual AMEX branded cards are issued by Maybank and hence, a Maybank platinum charge card will be quite similar in appearances to an AU platinum charge card with no specific Maybank branding on it. So visually, my AU card would've pretty much looked identical to theirs and hence I was hoping it might work.

Sure, to you. I feel that the way it states "The platinum card, or the platinum credit card issued by maybank..." is open to some interpretation, if you did not know that all the AMEX cards are issued by Maybank. Especially when I have the AMEX that is referred to as "the platinum card".

It could be clearer by stating "offer is open to maybank issued platinum cards only" or some such thing.
