A quick question regarding the travel insurance...

I just got off the phone with an ACE rep who advised that as per the T&Cs the coverage stops when:

Cover for a Trip ceases at the earlier of:
(a) when You return to Your usual place of residence;

She said that based on that, if luggage were to be lost after I returned home (i.e. I just arrived home and my luggage did not show up) it may not be covered? Of course, she did state that she is not a claims assessor, and that all claims are assessed on a case by case basis.

Thoughts?
 
Sounds like a unlikely interpretation to me and one contrary to the spirit of the coverage.

If I have the right T&Cs then you are covered:

If during a Trip Your Personal Baggage or Money and Documents are damaged, or destroyed, lost or stolen and not recovered...

The T&Cs draw a distinction between losing your luggage and non-recovery which indicates that losing is one step and not recovering it is another. Since recovery can plainly occur after your Trip finishes (I doubt the insurer would argue they are obliged to pay out the value of luggage that turns up after the Trip finishes) all that is required is that your luggage be damaged, destroyed, lost or stolen during your Trip and not recovered at any later time.

So I personally would argue that my luggage is lost at the instant it isn't there waiting for me on the carousel - which is at a time before my Trip as defined finishes. If it should later turn up all that means is that my lost luggage was recovered and becomes un-lost and no claim can be lodged. If it doesn't turn up it stays lost and not recovered and I am entitled to claim.
 
Unless your place of residence is the arrivals hall at the airport (which for sometimes feels like it is...), then you should be covered until you get to your house!

I had a situation where I arrived back in Oz after a trip to Fiji and came back to MEL via SYD. The baggage system in Sydney crashed and we didn't get the bags until 3 days later. I didnt go directly home - I was working in Bendigo at the time so went straight up there and Amex insurance paid out the $700 or emergency expenses after 6 hours and again after 48 hours.

Melbourne is my home town but technically I didn't actually return to my place of residence (my house) for another 5 days, therefore my trip hadn't ended, and they paid out under the luggage delay.

If I had gone home first, they wouldn't have paid out, because delayed luggage emergency expenses are not covered when you return to your home. In this case, whilst I had returned to my own airport, I was still going to a different destination.

Lost/stolen luggage is a different part of the policy from luggage delay, and would be covered if the luggage is not recovered even once you are home, as it has actually gone missing before you get to your home.

OT for this discussion but I am having a battle with Ace insurance at the moment where they are doing everything possible to wriggle out of a claim. They are basing their interpretation on a pre existing illness even though the doctors have stated that the illness was not an issue at the time of booking. They now want to contact the doctor direct to ask more questions even though they have previously stated stated that they only needed this 'one' last detail (now provided) to complete the claim.

Needless to say, I am not very happy with them at the moment!

I'll give some more detail as things progress.
