I have just flown with a friend who is not as member and is not interested in being one. I paid for the flight and booked the flight and thought that with the recent changes I was entitled to the SC's and points. Is this incorrect ? Surely, if it is my money going to VA then I should also be entitled to the benefits ?

If they allowed accrual like that they would certainly be unique!

(I have no knowledge of Virgin Australias FF program.. but have never heard of one where you can earn like that!)

If you did the paying i think you would be well within your rights to ask that friend to sign up to Virgin's frequent flyer program (or you do it for them - hopefully its free???), claim the points and then transfer them to your account if Virgin allow that like Qantas does...

Probably the only way you are going to get the points but not the SC...

My understanding with the "pooling" of points or SC's is that it must be family members, according to their VFF booklet:

Plus, it hasn't been released yet, it's still a "benefit coming soon"

So I think you miss out on both fronts :(

Plus points transfers have a minium amount.....5000 min. per transfer rings a bell.
