I have two return F seats for Mel-Lax this October, which was 576,000 point and taxes were $605.
I have just gone to book 1 return seat Mel-Bne J, then Bne-Lax premium economy and return Mel-Lax Y seat, points 144,000 but the taxes are $650ish. Is this right? How can they be dearer for one seat, with substantially less points?

I suspect it is because of more take offs and landings. If you haven't flown "F" before I am sure you will find it a treat. Enjoy !!

Hmm, so because the flight lands in Brisbane it's double what I paid?

I am very fortunate to have a lot of ff points, we usually fly F twice a year, - can't fly any other way now though lol.

Just found two direct flight in Y and taxes are $628 so it isn't the landings. Is this the dearer fuel prices that they talked about instead?

Is the new award one booking or separate bookings? It does make a difference if it is one booking then the whole itinerary wil be charged at business class rates. I am guessing you have separate bookings. Anyway.

As for taxes and surcharges I have not been paying much attention lately but believe that the fuel surcharge on award bookings has increased recently. Also the fuel surcharge for MEL-LAX rreturn will not be the same as the fuel surcharge for MEL-BNE-LAX-MEL as you will be paying an additional fuel surcharge for the domestic flight MEL-BNE as well. You may also need to pay airport/security charge for BNE airport as well.

Cabin class (unless flying ex-LHR) should have nothing to do with the calculation of taxes and surcharges.

I think I read that the fuel surcharge was going up today (3 May).

Fwiw I booked a 5 leg flight to/ around the US on Sunday night and it came up with approx $700 in taxes/surcharges
