Changes to points for surcharges, fees and taxes on domestic Australian and New Zealand Classic Awards
Due to higher fuel costs, the points required when paying for surcharges, fees and taxes on domestic Classic Award flights in Australia and New Zealand are changing.
For bookings from 1 April 2012, the charge will increase from 4,500 to 4,850 points.
Then, for bookings from 1 July 2012 for domestic Classic Award flights in Australia only, the points required will further increase from 4,850 to 5,250 points, due to the carbon price system.

This would make it three increases in twelve months if I'm not mistaken...?

So at present we have:

QF BNE-SYD J 16000 + $26.46 or 20500 going to 20850 shortly.
DJ BNE-SYD J 13800 + $16 or 16700 total (or 6900 points & $58)

Pretty obvious choice when it comes to burn!

Well, will be 21,250 for QF vs 16,700 for DJ from 1 July 2012.
Over 25% more expensive to fly QF vs Virgin for a classic award....

I'm not sure about you, but that seems expensive to me!!

Just thought about it... isn't that a 75% increase in the point surcharge in 13.5 months? Impressive!

Well QF is a "premium airline", and it provides "better food" than DJ ....

At the moment DJ wins easily for redeeming points for domestic flights.

I am not really interested in paying a lot more for a cupcake! And not all QF flights have meals!

Having had some flights where I had the choice of a muffin or a cookie on QF, I really don't think that is worth paying much extra for! It really depends on where you are travelling as to whether the food is better!

I think that is the answer....

QF for RTW trips
DJ for Domestic Y
Probably DJ for J International? Perhaps sometimes QF for J international???
Either for Domestic J, depending on specific prices and availability for the routes?

Thoughts?

I wouldn't pay the surcharges with points in any case. No way that 4,500 points is a good trade for $26.

Of course, that's just me. For those awash with points, they may not care.

So this announcement is 'meh' to me.

With the fuel surcharge increasing from $10 to $12 on domestic redemptions it was bound to result in a points increase.
