Hi Guys,

If i flew on a J ticket with Qantas, put in a request and got an upgrade to First do i still earn points on SC on the J fare i paid for for? Or when you upgrade with points and are successful, do you not earn points or SC?

I ask this as my friends just did Mel-HKG return, paid for J, got upgrade to F for 25,000 points each way and he has come back to thr 25,000 point deductions, but where the flights are in the activity statement it says 0 points and 0 SC earn. To Top that off they debited him twice on the upgrades for each leg!?

Anyone able to clarify the rules on this? Im looking at going for a J to F upgrade early next year, and a Prem Econ to J upgrade mid year, but maybe wont do it if i cant earn SC as i will miss out on Gold then.

This is a known problem and a call to Qantas will see it rectified in quick time. They should also remedy the double withdrawal of the upgrade points.

Essentially you will get the points and SCs for the fare you paid for.

He will get the points/SC's for the J travel. A simple phone call to Qantas should fix the problem.

You earn points for the paid fare level on qantas, not the upgrade class. But you earn no points for a classic award.

Was your friend flying on an any seat award? What you report sometimes happens with those fare giving 0 points. Really your friend needs to ring ip and sort that out.

On a slightly related (but positive) note... I have seen an example of a domestic on departure upgrade using points never having the points deducted!

Wow - was it a blue moon? Or was PolAir up up and away (p*gs will fly) - treasure that thought - likely be theonly time you see or hear about it happening!

Both my partner and I have experienced both of these situations each time we fly SYD-LHR (and elsewhere): it is a long-standing computer glitch that reads the booking as a Classic Award rather than a points upgrade. Mind you, with the number of people ringing to complain, you'd think that someone in IT would finally get round to fixing the problem, wouldn't you! Come on Red Roo, etc - get the matter sorted!

As others have said though, a simple phone call to Qantas rectifies the matter in just a couple of minutes.

I think they have fixed the computer glitch as my last two J-F points upgrades have posted immediately with the relevant J points and SC, mind you that might be due to my royal status ;p

This has happened to me. I suspect it was because it was very close to the departure time and perhaps the ODU window had closed and couldn't handle the points deduction.

Not sure about that.

I had to speak to QF yesterday about flights on 30th Mar and 28th Apr not posting. It was fixed quickly, but it seem that IT Q&A has slipped a bit. :(

It's definitely been fixed for me on the last two occasions. Both flights posting within 48hours. I could post a screen shot of my activity statement if I were clever enough but then you'd all see how many points I get at Woolies

I have been upgraded at the airport and recieved points at the upgraded level, my +1 recieved her Japan flight points, twice. I have also lost points but always found it easy to have the problem fixed, funny isn't it how when we get to many points, we dont tell the airline

Looks like you have had a good run. I once got status and points for classic award on Dom flight after I agreed to change to earlier flight at airport. Obviously they lost fare status in the change. Many years ago now

One time I was en route to LAX on deep discount Y fare (around $860 return), & had requested an upgrade to J (as we were often allowed to do in the thick of the GFC) which had not come through at -5hrs, nor at checkin. I was feeling a bit ordinary that day so as I arrived at the Flounge I asked again if the upgrade availability had changed. It had not.

Spa treatment, lunch & some good red later the flight was called. As I went past the desk someone noticed me, called me over & printed out a new boarding pass for me :D

When I checked my activity statement, no points deducted, but no points or sc gained. It showed as an award flight. Call me stupid, but I rang up & pointed this out, & that they hadn't deducted the points. I had after all requested the upgrade!

At the end of the day I still got more than what I had paid for: Points & SC for discount Y, plus points upgrade to J on an amazing un-upgradable fare.
