Hi all

I was just wondering if people had had much/any success upgrading J -> F on the A380.

I have an upcoming trip to the UK and I might try and upgrade to F using points and the flights are showing:

SYD-LHR F4 A4
LHR-SYD F8 A8

I would need to flick some points to QF from Amex to fund this (not a major trauma)

If QF are not giving points upgrades on the A380 yet then I will reroute the journey to improve SC earning...

Cheers

S

They do happen - these days it basically seems to depend on the loadings, same as with the 744's and the 330's.

It's 60K each way if successful.

Thanks - what I might try to do is something like:

SYD-xx_-LHR-SYD with xx_ being any one of SIN/BKK/HKG with separate flight numbers to maximise SCs given the loadings are lower on the LHR-SYD flight.

Thanks

+1 it definitely happens but you will need high status relative to everyone on the flight.

They took QF9 MEL-SIN and were points-upped on the 744 then switched to QF 31 SIN-LHR on the 380 and were opped-up.

Of course, status played a part there......

Definately happens. Been able to upgrade a number of times on the SYD-SIN and vv. All depends on loadings and status I imagine. With F8/A8 I would imagine you'd have a pretty good chance. I've been able to snaffle loadings around A3/A4...

I got three upgrades from J to F on the same 380 flight in April from LHR-SIN (and then again from SIN-SYD on a 744) - for Marge, Maggie and myself. From memory the loadings were showing A4 in the days leading up to the flight (I checked Seatcounter every day from the executive lounge at the Hilton Tower Bridge). So, as others have said, QF seem to be willing to hand them out subject to loadings and status.

Looks like it will be worth a shot then. Just need to tie into what my colleague is planning to fly and lock in some bookings.

Just keep an eye out for A/C changes. I had QF31 booked on an A380 in arch and applied for an upgrade to F. Then they switched it to a 744.

Now trying to switch to QF9 which is the A380.

Definitely worth a shot!

I managed to snag a J->F upgrade on the A380 in May 2009; this was on a I ticket, although I was only flying QF31 SYD-SIN, not all the way to LHR. The upgrade feature online didn't work - we had to call QF. Both of us were WPs, although the other pax on the booking was a WP+PG+LTG, plus a lot more :D So naturally he made the call to QF.

Apparently the loadings looked tight in F leading up to the day, which gave us the impression that it mightn't go through. But we got the upgrade along with at least four others in the cabin. I say "at least" because we didn't ask everyone in the (full) F cabin how they got their seat, but I did talk to four others around me and all of them were there due to a points upgrade. Very unusual for QF, I know, although to compensate there are a number of complicating factors that one could argue to rationalise our upgrades, or QF's apparent generosity.

So yes - give it a go! And pray for no equipment change, although unless the bloatbuses start to show more, real signs of fault, it would be very unsporting of QF to keep switching aircraft. (QF 744 F is pretty good but definitely not as good as 388 F).

Definitely, I have never been able to get a Classic Award redemption for the A380 (never tried Platinum request on it, but when I enquired it seemed like a lost cause anyway. I'm going to try next time if I can...or rather when I somehow rack up another 192,000 points.)

Can tell you from experience that it does happen. I was successful a few months ago MEL to LAX:lol:

Of course helps if you are a QF WP which would almost guarantee it if there are seats!

Looking at this from a different perspective (and clearly a very personal one), I consider the relative difference between the hard products in J and F on the 744 is greater than that on the A380.

I would be less inclined to upgrade on the A380 than the 744 for that reason, as I would be happy enough in J. Having said that, I would be happy to pay for F in either.

Depends how many CLs are waiting at the top of the list, towering above all the mere WPs...

NYCguy did say 'almost', which for 99% of us who are not fortunate enough to be bestowed with CL status, is the best we can do. :)
