Hi All,

I have a Intl flight later this week with 2 legs. One leg is ~7.5 hours the 2nd leg is 5 hours.

I have put in a points upgrade request for J (24,000 points) on 2nd leg only. However according to Seat Counter Y is almost full, (even fully flexible). And J class only has 3 seats left.
So it looks like my upgrade may not happen.

The predicament I have is can I put a points upgrade request in for both, but have more priority on the 2nd leg? As I don't have enough points for both legs and would rather upgrade the 2nd leg first, if that makes sense, then only if 2nd leg is not available then 1st leg should be accepted.

Slightly confusing wording I know, hopefully it makes sense.

Thanks all!

There is no process to specify preference for which upgrade request you prefer; whichever clears 1st clears 1st and will be applied

Bugger!

Oh well the best I can hope for is an Op-Up on the 1st leg. (A380) which has plenty of J/F seats left, however not many Y's left.
Fingers crossed for the upgrade on the 2nd leg!

Another issue is what benefits do you get for the upgrade? These can vary depending upon the flight?

Is one flight overnight where a bed may be useful. Is the other a day flight where you'd simply watch a movie or three?

The 2nd leg is a Night flight arriving early hours of the morning.. hence would love to sleep in the flat bed of J class.
Whereas the 1st leg is afternoon flight, arriving evening and would be mainly watching movies.

Well, IMHO - there's no real dilemma. Will you fly QF again - as a PS I am sure it's likely.

So if this upgrade does not come though then you have more points to request one the next time.

Today on 'Manage My Booking' my 2nd leg shows as Waitlisted for Business(U).
Is this a good sign, or just normal procedure for points upgrade?

Yes this is normal, but doesn't mean confirmed. I have had this in the past when they are massaging the yields ;), once they bring in status preferences, it can be gone as quick as it arrived :(
From my experience and understanding of the system, they allocate the highest classes first, then move down. So if you request J, Y+ is only invoked if your J upgrade is unsuccessful.

I just checked in Manage My booking again and looks like my upgrade went through, even though there is around T-20 hours left before my flight.
The waitlisted part has disappeared and I have been allocated 1A and my old Y seat is now showing as blocked instead of occupied.
Also when I check the Seat Map on Manage my booking it only shows Business class seats now.

Is this safe to say my upgrade went through? Please yes!

:)

If you see the lovely term "Confirmed", congratulations! :)
They tend to allocate long before the T-5 they advise on the website. Yield like to get a head start. Enjoy the champagne!

Oh, and 1A as a PS, well done! Must be a quiet flight, you may even have 1B to enjoy also :)

It says:
Status: Confirmed
Upgrade status: Requested
Travel Class: Business (U)

Looks like you have been successful, as indicated by U class (business award/upgrade booking class). If you have seat allocation, you should be good to go!
As far as that is concerned, you are confirmed in Business class. Enjoy! :p

What's the flight number by the way, I'll check the loads for you? Just checked the OP and you have seat counter so ignore that :) Although KVS that I use has seat maps for all classes which tend to reflect the reality rather than over-bookings :)

By the way, Op-Up is rather unlikely, but it's nice to dream ;)

Even as a QP NB I was always able to get bulkhead rows on Intl flights in Y (almost full flights too).
Only thing I can think of is that my flights are always of higher class, For example I almost always book on Super Saver tickets, occasionally red-e-deals. So my class is always S,V,M,L and so forth.

This goes to show that status isn't everything and that how much you pay really does count a bit!

Actually, status is very important in relation to Upgrades.

Of those who requested points upgrades, all WP would be granted before any SG and only after those are exhausted will PS be looked at.

This is actually defined in the T&C's.

Current anecdotal based wisdom suggests that fare class is a secondary determinant within each status level. i.e. An SG booked in L class would be upgraded before an SG booked in S class.

An SG, WP or CL will trump you every time, guaranteed, regardless of fare class. I think you are lucky that there are many seats, and not much competition :p
If this weren't the case, why would anyone bother with this programme and achieving higher status levels?
I personally have noticed business loads are still pretty low, first abysmal, which is great for upgrades :p

When I checked Exper Flyer this afternoon, there were only J4 and Y(Full Y) 5.So looks like very heavy load. Either way I am not complaining!

Thanks for all your assistance on my first points upgrade :)

P.s- points have been deducted now.. J here I come!

Well that magical OP-UP happened to me !!!
I got an op-up on my first leg at the gate (SYD-SIN) to PE (With full PE service) on A380.
Boarding pass went 'Beep' 'Unable to board' then got directed to the service desk who then said 'I trust you will enjoy this Sir, have a great flight' and directed me down the business/PE boarding line which had noone in it, compared to Y having hundreds waiting in line!

The PE experience was absolutely awesome to say the least, I would even say better than my J experience on the 2nd leg.
THe staff were very attentive, the cabing felt very private, staff remembering names and wine choices was great as well.

I'll post a better trip report when I get back.
