Thinking of booking PER - SIN return for 2 on the latest sale fares for flying in late February. Have about 50k QFF points - can I use these to upgrade to J on the return leg only?

Also, got a choice between the A333 and A332. As a Y flyer, I always pick the newer A332, but which is better in J, keeping in mind the flight timings are quite bad (7.45pm and 11.35pm departure)

You can upgrade one leg only but the sale fares book into class 'N' which is not upgradeable. You'd have to go for the Red-e-Deal I think.
As for aircraft choice, other things being equal, I would expect the A332 to offer a better chance with more J seats and fewer Y.

Remember you are on the international 332's which offer the same product is the same as each other

According to booking page for Red e-deal, Flight Upgrade Awards are not eligible on all Red e-Deal fares.Flight Upgrades can only be redeemed on Qantas operated flights.
Looks like I would have to go for Flexi Saver!

Keep in mind upgrades are not guaranteed.. it'd be an expensive Y seat if the upgrade doesn't come through.

Flexi Saver from SIN to PER seems very cheap, but for PER - SIN, a flexi saver is almost the same price as a sale return fare.
Is J really worth it on the A332?

A friend of mine who is a QF fanboy was boasting to me about how he is going to buy 2 x cheap Y QF e-deals MEL-DXB-LHR and then use points to upgrade both people to J yet I think he only has about 100,000 points. If this is possible, surely he will need far, far more points than this?

It's 96,000 each way per ticket...

i wouldn't bother upgrading a 5 hour flight personally, save your points for bigger fish :)
