HI,
At the time of booking I thought the charges for two people return to Europe in classic rewards business class, seemed reasonable ($2,295.64). It wasn't until other charges turned up my my credit card that I began to question the amount I had been charged. I am still pursuing these extra charges.

My original booking that I had to cancel due to Finnair cancelling Tokyo segments of my flight was to have cost for 2 people a total of $949.68 plus points for travel SYD-TOKYO (JL) (stopover) TOKYO-HELSINKI (AY) (Stopover) Return: VIENNA-TOKYO (AY) (Stopover) ; TOKYO-SYDNEY (JL).

My new booking was:
Outbound:
MEL-SINGAPORE (JQ - Stopover) -
SIN-PARIS (via Helsinki AY)

Return: LON-SYD (QF) (Via Singapore)
2 people total cost $2,295.64 plus points.

When I redid a cost breakdown of the first leg the total cost would have been $592.04 for 2 people plus points.
LON-SYD (via Singapore leg) should be in my estimate $944 for 2 people plus points. Giving a grand total of $1,536.00 plus points.
In my calculations for my new trip there is an amount of $759.64 not accounted for, that has been charged to my credit card.
I hope my question is clear? I've tried contact Qantas to check this big gap in what the flight should have cost versus what I paid?
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you factored in air passenger duty (the London tax), from memory it as around GBP180 per pax.

Thanks fro the suggestion Matt, No I didn't factor that in. I understood that it is expensive flying out of London, however I didn't realise it was that much!! So much cheaper to fly from the continent by the looks of it. Is there anyway to find out these extra charges on Qantas website. I didn't print out the extra charges like I usually do...this extra cost just seems huge compared to flying in and out of Europe and avoiding London

In addition to the LHR tax, it is likely that QF/JQ/AY have all increased fuel surcharges due to War in Romania driving up fuel costs (and in AYs case them havign to fly longer routes to avoid Russian airspace).

@travelbee26 I do not know where to find a break down without making a booking. This is the taxes breakdown for a classic rewards booking for x1 PAX flying on QF2 this is pricing from the UK website. If you were not planning to be in the UK other than to fly out it is cheaper to start in the EU and just use LHR as a connection.

Thanks Mat, I’m thinking of attempting the change from London to Europe. We were only going via London to be able to source a flight back to Sydney. I have looked at Qatar again, which didn't come up in my original flight plan, however to fly business class from Europe to Doha, then first class from Doha to Sydney (not much else available) would cost me similar to flying out of London with an extra 60,000 points…that is looking like an experience to do. Thanks for your input 👌

Yes, that is probably the case. I have been following AY‘s journey and they were going to fly over the artic from last week, however they must have had a change of plans and decided to cancel their flights to Tokyo, and many summer flights generally.

If you can start in INV or DUB that ADP will disappear.
I have used Sri Lankin UL manage my booking to display the taxes, coding & description

Is your booking out bound and inbound on the same ticket if so I would ditch the MEL-SIN JQ flight (I am assuming in Y) and switch to OW. If you use OW carriers and as you already have AY in your booking a BA flight from anywhere in the EU connecting to QF via LHR flight will satisfy the OWR rules, your points will cap at 318K per person, milage should not be an issue. Also if your current booking is on a single ticket adding in the QR F sector your whole booking will be repriced as F.

Almost certainly UK APD is kicking your butt. As above, leaving from INV (or I think Aberdeen?) or DUB will drastically reduce the charges. Specially in premium cabins APD has gone up thanks to BoJo wanting more money (they did reduce in Y IIRC).
