Possible to cancel DXB-SYD leg of LGW-DXB-SYD flight

And the saga continues... I spoke to Qantas here in Paris and they told us that if we wanted to change to business for the flights back to Sydney, it would cost nearly $15000 (claiming 'availability' despite J being not exactly packed) ... so that's not being done lol.

I spoke to a doctor who definitely thinks my back will be wrecked after 13.5 hours in Y - so I need to figure out how to get into J (without being bent over a barrel) ... the best option seems to be CX from Dubai (I mean apart from hoping for an op-up for both ... yeah, that'll happen) ...

As I've never had to do it before and my knowledge on this stuff is pretty limited - can I cancel the DXB-SYD leg relatively easily (I'm not seeking out any kind of credit/refund)?

No. A few have tried and lost. Skipping the first leg is dangerous, as they can cancel the whole ticket. Skipping the last one is easy. Done that many times - I frequently fly with an airline that does not sell oneway tickets. Flying one segment and trashing the way back is just common.

Just go to the QF Desk and tell that you wont't continue on flying.

Flying with luggage can make it a bit more complicated. Make sure that your luggage is only tagged to DXB. Just tell that you need access to your luggage in DXB. Won't work if the connection is too tight.

But as LGW-DX and DXB-SYD are no through flights it has to be unloaded anyway. So go to the ground staff as soon as you have landed to prevent your luggage from beeing loaded onto the SYD flight.

If it is more than one wanting to upgrade it doesn't sound that far off tbh.

Wonder what the yield managers are thinking.

Sure, full price but this sounds much more than full price.

A paid J fare at normal price is still far better than an empty one.

They must know something else that I can't think of.

Last week I called to bring forward my J return ex NRT: $2K extra per person to fly on 30/ 31 Dec but on Jan 1st, only $100 more.

EF showed an empty J cabin on Dec 30/31.

They still fly the empty plane !
 
CX from DXB is $1900. You can book those exact QF/EK flights online for $4500 or on their websites for around $5k

I get a feeling the service person I was speaking to was a bit shocked... She did some typing made a very soft gasp, said "oh, let me double check this"... then before she said anything about the price she said "the prices are based on availability..."

I admit, dealing with Qantas direct, I was expecting something whacky, but I stopped, thanked her, said we needed to discuss that option but she kept repeating "it is based on availability ..." Noting that when we attempted dummy bookings on EK, you cannot get a Y seat and can book the max no of J seats
