Hi Folks,

Thought you might be interested in this.

About this time next month, subject to change of course, QF will be allowing prepaid excess baggage.

You will be able to purchase it in groups of weight, rather than in 1kg increments. (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 & 35kg lots.)

Obviously this will save time going to a sales desk if you have excess baggage, but also, pre-paying will be up to 20% cheaper than paying for it at the airport.

Cheers.

Oh no, is this a sign of things being really strict for status pax? I always travel with skis and alot of equipment. The only time I've had to pay excess was in Japan because they do everything to the letter :(

(Other than that, good news on the discount I guess, but easy for QF to make money if you don't fill it!)

Things will be still the same at the airport when it comes to excess baggage, its just now you have the option to pre pay it if you know you will be over, and don't want a hassle at the airport.

Actually, OCT is a very busy month for announcements for QF.

I believe the days of agent flexibility with bags for status pax are well behind us. I had a checkin agent tell me I was up for 1kg excess baggage and was asked for payment - until I reminded her to check and see I was inbound from LAX hence had my USA entitlements.

It is already happening. The system seems to be pretty decent in determining the luggage allowance vs weight checked in and then ensuring that any excess is paid before the BP is given. One big bug with it in that it doesn't update the allowances when using points to upgrade

At least PER is still being lenient with the miners/tradies etc doing FIFO. I know my brother had 40kg of excess baggage to and from Port Hedland and was let off each time with a smile. Not that he cares- company would pay, but always good to know if you're polite/flirty enough.

Would be nice to have the discount apply to status at the airport too, sort of a little extra helping hand because you have status.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They already give a big helping hand with the extra 10Kg/15Kg allowances

I agree! Infact any stricter charging increases the value of this benefit to FF.

One of the companies I work for has an exception rule built into our fares for extra luggage. Lots of group travel and corporate deals do.

I would argue that if you then went over this limit, being a frequent flyer/high status pax you might then be entitled to a 20% discount on top of that limit. Eventually, one airline will do it and others will follow suit, just to give that little extra bit. It's not like it's cutting into a revenue stream that has been around for long anyway.

I'm getting OT though.

This is now available through Manage Your Booking from 7 days prior to a flight. (better late than never)

For MEL-LAX it allows you to add an extra 1 or 2 pieces in addition to your 2 pieces already. (you are not offered kg option here)

Price is $105 per piece or 15000 points if you have them avail.

0.7 cents per point:shock:

That is not a good burn rate. You can get over 4c using them for flights so I think this is a little rude of QF.

However $105 per bag extra is also a little rough IMHO.

Thank god for WP.

I think $105 for an extra bag (23kg) Transpacific is quite reasonable..

I was charged $80 (talked down from over $100) flying SYD-CBR coming home from the US*... that was charged on a per kilo basis.. Big shock as the last time I paid on that route it was a flat $25... which I though was reasonable.. but which of course is still FAR more per "kilo/km" than $105 MEL-LAX!!!

* (NZ Gold Elite/*A Gold which doesn't help with no *A carrier domestically..:()

And yes, I did make up that "kilo/km" measure.... sounds good eh?
