Howdy :) I am flying to Tokyo tomorrow and when I originally chose my seat a month or so ago, it seems the configuration of the plane was different (economy started at row 26 I think). Now economy seems to start at row 34, but rows 34-37 are 2-3-2 configuration with the rest of the plane in 3-4-3. I was able to choose seat 36k, does this mean that it will actually be a premium economy seat by chance? Will be very happy if it is, as it's an overnight flight and I will be working most of Tuesday.

Or are there any other Y seats recommended for trying to get a decent sleep? The flight doesn't look that full, so I was kinda hoping that I would be able to ask for a 3 seat to myself so I could lie down, but I've not gone premium economy before (if that is what 36k ends up being), so not sure what the best plan is.

Any advice much appreciated :)

Thanks, Suey

2-3-2 configuration? That's not Premium Economy (It's 2-4-2) - sounds like Business to me.

I've got limited connectivity at the moment, so can't check further. But either way, as long as your seat reservation holds (and they don't do a last minute substitution of flights), it does sound like you're in a higher cabin with Economy service.

sorry it is 2-4-2, typo :) So premium economy seat, economy food etc? I was booked in seat 40C, which I think is a bulkhead, but the seat next to me now (36J) looks blocked out on expert flyer, so hopefully, that is where I will stay.

Isn't the SYD-NRT-SYD route now flown by 744s configured 56J 356Y? Wouldn't that make 36K economy economy?

Would it help if the OP now does OLCI to ensure (more so) the seat he has as currently shown?

Probably would, but keep in mind "seats may be changed at any time due to operational reasons regardless of whether a passenger is checked in or not".

I'm assuming the plane has been substituted with a 4 class plane for operational reasons (eg maintenance, CEO has a ticket, A baggage trolley ran rampage at SYD etc etc etc.)

Well that is sounding very promising, will do OLCI very soon :) But, since the flight is not very full, would I be better trying to snag a 3 seat to myself for best chance at sleep, or sticking with this seat and hoping I get to keep it?

According to ExpertFlyer, this is a 4 class plane: rows 1-4 are first class, and 11-26 are business. Rows 34-37 are PE (2-4-2 config), but showing as "economy". If are you seated in row 36, then you are sitting in PE

Well I went into the booking this morning after looking on expert flyer and finding 34K (PE bulkhead) was available with the seat next to it blocked out, so I got very excited and tried to change my seat, as the seat next to my current seat of 36k is now allocated and I was a bit worried about being able to get in and out of the seat easily (so was considering changing back to 40G bulkhead which is now available).

However, when I went to change the seat, qantas site said it was not able to confirm.

Does this mean it is likely I will get that seat, or not likely and should I rock up at the airport 3.5 hours early to try get it? Is there any other way to try and confirm the seat? ie ring qantas? I did the OLCI last night, so could that be why I am not able to change seat now?

Oh man, I hope it works out fto be a good seat for me, I just found out that my NB colleague also going to Japan got an upgrade on her JAL flight this morning. I asked her to go JAL instead of QF, as we booked it really late and JAL was much cheaper, damn! (not to mention a day flight instead of night!)

Oh happy days!!! Just went to try and do the OLCI again to reconfirm the seat, and I now have seat 25F in business, yay!! My first upgrade, I'm pretty excited being a pleb who usually travels in economy :D

Well all my qantas griping and ill feeling of the past has lifted, cos not only did I get the business class upgrade, the check in agent asked me if I wanted to sit in a first class seat , but said I would 'only' get business class service, is that OK

The flight was SO great, I was very happy to get my first taste of the good stuff :p will be working very hard to get my business going well enough to afford for us all to go business on international flights all the time lol

Oh dear!

Somewhat better than an upgrade on JL, no? ;) Good work, and may the upgrade gods smile on you more often!

You'll never look at a whY seat quite the same again after having sat in F .. :p

Spoilt for life! I struggle to get the missus to go anywhere in economy since she tasted the high life on a points flight. Damn you Qantas ;) !

Lol. What a great story! A perfect start to time away. As others have indicated - how on earth do you return to Economy anytime soon? ;)
