I am a silver velocity member currently a few thousand points short of gold. I Fly DJ regularly and they are my preferred airline by a long shot, i am a lounge member, and a loyal DJ customer whenever i have any choice. I flew back from Brisbane to Melbourne last night and decided to take up the offer for the PE upgrade "tester" that DJ has been spruiking. Unfortunately i have to say that i was pretty underwhelmed with the experience.

The first problem came with the upgrade process itself. You have to call the DJ phone number between 3 hours and 45 minutes before you fly to purchase an upgrade. When you call the number, it is not entirely clear which option is the right one. I can't remember the exact options but none of them clearly indicate the right menu option to choose (is it a "new" booking? is it changing an existing booking? do you use the P/E line even if you haven't yet got a P/E booking?) - it would be great if this was clearer!

Second problem, having got through to an operator i landed one who had never heard of the P/E taster promotion. He first tried to sell me a full P/E fare and not the $50 upgrade. It took several minutes to convince him that the option existed. He put me on hold several times while he tried to figure it out and then left me on hold in silence (hold music wasn't working) for about 5 minutes before i eventually hung up. I spent a little under 15 minutes on that call and still failed to make a booking.

Attempt two went a little smoother. I got through to someone who had heard of the promotion, who was very nice despite my obvious grumpiness and managed to complete the process in about 8 minutes. I still spent a couple of minutes on hold in silence but i managed to insist on giving the guy my number in case it dropped out again so i was reassured.

The upshot was that it took me about half an hour out of my meeting to make what i thought would be a quick call for the upgrade. I stepped out of a meeting to make the phone call and by the time i returned my colleagues were less than impressed. That is totally rediculous for anyone, like me, who is interstate for a day or two of work meetings. Had i known it would be that complicated there is no way i would have done it.

The final problem was the actual flight. One of the main reasons i went with PE was free live to air - i figure i pay for L2A and couple of drinks on each flight so a $50 PE upgrade (on the two hour BNE-MEL flight) is not a massive extra expense.

Unfortunately i ended up in seat 1C with no choice in the matter (it was a chockers flight) and was the only person on the plane who COULDN'T watch L2A at take off and landing due to the configuration of the screens (they have to pull them out after take off and stow them for landing). I am actually a slightly nervous flyer at take off and landing so i spent both looking around enviously at all the other non P/E people who had something to watch or read while i couldn't even reach for the mag, my bag or a screen. I know some people love these seats, but for me they are the worst seats on the plane and i was given no choice in the matter.

On the upside, the staff on board the flight were excellent, the service was great and i managed to extract some of the value out of food and beverages.

Maybe i'll chalk it up as a learning experience and try it again (i know which seats to request next time) but i'd have to say that i was pretty disapointed. I'd love to rave about it but it was actually a lot of extra hassle, a lot of wasted time, for what ultimately turned out to be an inferior experience to what i usually get in economy.

Maybe i was just unlucky.

Hello Everyone

I upgraded to Premium Economy on Thursday's DJ 169 from BNE - HIR. I did this at check in where I was told it would cost SBD$60 which has to be paid by credit card. I think the girl meant AUD$60 but I wasn't going to question SBD$60 for an upgrade! Am still waiting for the charge to be itemised on my credit card.....

The flight was fairly packed in economy but I had my row to myself. Four passengers in PE plus the ground crew staff member who oversees proceedings on the ground. Ended up shoes off, legs across the seat which of course caused envous looks from most people who went past.

Watched Benjamin Button which is 160 minutes long according to the guide - we landed then one minute later the movie ended.

Was great having the complementary food and drink however chose not to drink as I had work to do as soon as I landed.

Was it worth it? Absolutely, even just to have the row to myself for the three hour flight. Service was lovely.

The crew did not have enough arrival cards for everyone which meant those at the rear (not me :)) had to quickly fill them out in the terminal.

I asked the crew about my friends paying for an upgrade inflight but was told the ability does not exist yet. If it did I am sure the Premium Economy seats would have been filled.

Karen

PS For those who followed my status run last week I wasn't given any phone numbers this flight. I did have one of my friends comes and sit with me for a few minutes. He was exit row but jealous of my seats. Then he sat with me last night to watch the footy on the big screen. Hmm........

Regards to the seating, I believe in the 1st row premium seats 1a / 1c on the left side of the a/c, that is classified as an exit row, therefore I believe it is a CASA requirement that all, baggage, audio visual units etc, get stowed for the short period that is take off and landing, so I guess it was only around 10 mins either side of the flight that L2A was not set up.

Good to hear the service inflight was good

All up it was probably a little over half an hour on ground and after take off without L2A. I understand the requirement. I just don't understand why PE passengers have no choice in the matter. Surely the point of PE is to get what you want and not to get lumped in situations that are highly undersirable.

If i do it again, i will put up a fight at check in -- lesson learnt on that front i guess.

Glad you had a better experience than i did! However, i'm curious about how you managed to do it at the airport. Half my grief was with the clueless phone people. Is this now standard practice?

I just asked and at first they were a bit reluctant but then I asked again and the girl looked up the price and she was quickly able to achieve it.

bloody hell - ive just spent the last half hour searching for it and even looking through the velocity website too lol.... i must be going blind!

thanks mark :)

Just looked at my credit card. The upgrade was charged at SBD$60!

As a passenger that was fantastic. As a share holder, way too cheap.

Interesting, although still strange that they could do it at the airport, and that at checkin (presumably at BNE), they would charge in SBD!

My situation and experience was almost 100% identical to 777's.
Not as easy as it should have been to organize it but service on board V good. Worth $50 Syd - Adl? Yeah.
Full price Premium Syd - Adl NO!

Cheers

I've flown quite a bit of PE in the past (paid) mostly MEL-SYD and ensured that I did not get allocated to 1A/1C.

For me, every other PE seat is better because you get:
(a) L2A from gate-to-gate
(b) your luggage in the overhead locker above your seat
(c) the ability to get your bag down and put it at your feet inflight
(d) personal space in front (1A/1C is only "shared" space)

I always asked for 1F. Best seat on the plane in my opinion. On one occasion, after asking for and being allocated 1F at the Lounge, they called me at the gate before boarding and told me I'd been moved to a better seat - 1C. I told them all the reasons why it was a worse seat, that I had paid for a better seat, and was not going to sit there. They eventually agreed and put me back in 1F. :)
