This is not a whinge but an observation from my past 2 flights on a Friday night BNE-SYD.

For as long as I can remember the cabin crew would do the meal/snack service after 4:00pm and you also get an alcoholic beverage. They would then come around and collect trays/rubbish and usually they would also load the cart with wine/beer/water and if they didn't have what you wanted they would bring it back for you. They then went through the cabin once or twice collecting rubbish.

On my last 2 flights, different crew, it would appear the crew do not come around to clean up until after the announcement from the captain. Last week they only had wine loaded and when I asked for a beer they refused as they were now preparing for landing. I complained and got a beer from the front. This week they did not have anything loaded on the cart. Not even water. I was in 4F and couldn't be bothered asking.

I know it's only 2 flights but appears to be deliberate. Cost cutting measure?

Hope I just encountered lazy ex-VA crew.

They FA in Y should have brought you another beer from the front, as it eventually happened. In this case it's very reasonable to bring someone sitting in Y beer from J because the crew loaded only wine on the cart, forgot the beer and clearly didn't have enough time to go back and get one.
It's basic customer service mixed with logic.

I feel your pain JohnK, although i have a slightly different whinge. Last week i flew from Bne to Mel towards the back of the bus as i was with my wife and kids. I asked for some wine at the end of the flight and was told i had to pay which i was ok with. I then watched the same male FA pour a glass of vino from J to everyone in row 4 as a freebie. I must say i found this somewhat annoying. I then remarked to Mrs Groundhog that next time i would sit up the front and she could sit in the back with the kids as it would save us money. That went down about as well as you would expect

Why can't they all sit up the front with you? Y costs the same whether you sit in the front row or the back row...

Done under two different bookings, mine for work and the wifes and kids was paid by us. As i wanted to sit with them and due to their low status it was at the non-pointy end.

Why didn't you ring and get the bookings linked and get them to allocate seats based on your QF Status. I have done this with Mrs Ansett and our Adult children? :)

Then either ask nicely for seating to be sorted, or be a gentleman and let her sit up the front for a change.

Normally we do but in this case we only remembered at check-in, which was too late to get decent seats (and free wine :-|)

Ahhhhhhh Poor planning but even still I presume you are Platinum or above so would have expected some sort of recognition.

Another variation. MEL to CBR late afternoon flight and I asked for a wine with my cheese snack.

FA asks for $6 and I change my mind, because 1. cheap tiny bottle is not worth it 2. cant be bothered fishing out the cash, 3. What the hell, i thought QF was a full service airline and 4. I'm on a full Y ticket.

After "prepare for landing" the FA comes back with a plastic cup of wine and offers it free of charge. I politely refuse telling him 1. We are about to land 2. I've finished my cheese which was the main point of getting the wine and 3. I had looked at the YSCB TAF before boarding and expect severe turbulence on descent (or words to that effect)... But thanks anyway.

The FA also had a free beer for the gent next to me. My fellow pax juggled that tinny all the way to the runway because about 30 seconds later the FO instructed all crew to be seated and we had some pretty wild turbulence.

I learned to expect nothing when flying Y.
Sometimes I get a greeting and sometimes not. Sometimes I'm offered a glass of wine while the P1 next to me is ignored and sometimes others are offered and I'm ignored.
There is no system of recognition on QF Y.

Ahh, but they are consistently inconsistent. At least there's one thing you can be assured of.

I'm only a WP and I agree. Depends on the FA.

Also depends on where you sit, I think. My colleague and I (him a NB) were in 23AB on the way back from PER the other day and the FA was great - desserts from J, G&T's offered constantly. The good packets of nuts etc.

No one else got this treatment though.

YMMV.

Yep, when there is no clear system it's all up to the FA.

I agree but from a different point of view. I got some of the best treatments in Y when changed flights in the last minute (usually to an early departure) and couldn't score a good seat (by that I mean anything that is not bulkhead or exit row ;) ).
I call it "the pity treatment" :D

Looks like a reason to fly VA, if QF are not going to hand out the mandatory 2 drinks per flight.

Cost cutting measure?
Perhaps this sector/time has recently moved from a 5 cabin crew staffed flight to a 4 crew flight, and this is the resulting change in service procedure?

Interesting thought. I am on the same flight this Friday.
