I hope some of the AFF brains trust can help me out. Mr Julesmac & I are going to London next June, and apart from visiting family want to stay right in London for a few days. Some months ago in one of the weekend paper's travel sections, I read of a couple of sites where you could find rooms to stay (not just the UK but other countries too) for short periods - seemed to be a new thing, people renting one or two rooms in their house/apartment, or even moving out if it was a small place. Excellent rates. We are doing this trip on the smell of an oily rag so it appealed. I hope someone might know about this. Thanks!

I'm sure there are others but as Pollywaffle suggests airbnb.com seems to getting most of the attention and is front of mind and as soon as a site gets like that it attracts more searchers and owners...
