Hello, sorry if this is a rookie question that everyone else knows the answer to.
I booked a flight to Melbourne and back a few months ago, leaving on wednesday this week coming. Do the FF points only get awarded when you actually take the flight? Why aren't they there already seeing I paid for the flight?
Sorry if it's a stupid question. Just trying to keep track of the points coming in. BTW how do people do that? Keep track of all the points i mean - do you just trust they will get into your account? Or do you keep a list somewhere ??
Cheers

Points post after you've completed the flight. Usually within 24 hours but sometimes a few days.

You can view your points history via the Qantas website. I tend to just log in after a trip and make sure everything posted as expected. I don't travel that frequently that I'd be able to lose track.

Incidentally you will not receive any points (or status credits) if you don't fly, even if you have paid the fare and don't receive a refund.

Points post after your flight. They do not post when you pay because you need to actually fly to get the points.

One of the best pieces of advice I received many years ago was to always hold onto your boarding pass until after your flights have posted to your account. Sometimes things go wrong and if you ever need to chase the airlines for missing points/status credits they will always ask for a copy of your boarding pass.

For a QF award issued on qantas services, nothing to worry about. If everything goes wrong, qantas just takes normal revenue seats and converts them into award seats and reissues the tickets.

That's were OLCI is handy as you can save a pdf copy in case you lose your cardboard one.

Having a boarding pass proves you checked in but doesn't prove you actually flew as you could decide you're not travelling after your boarding pass has been issued.

And there is never such a thing as a silly question. It is best to be sure.

I check account every few weeks. If something missing or not look right then I follow up.

And if you have an ABN, you could signup to Qantas Business rewards and get extra points for each flight. Then anyone who books with QF can add your ABN to earn your bonus points for their flight (like parents, partner etc).

Seconded!! I noticed a JQ flight failed to post any points or SC earn and it took a boarding pass evidence in order for the flight to be recognised.

Admittedly it was a cancelled QF service which has me re-booked onto the JQ flight so it was somewhat expected that there would be difficulties.

The trick there is asking for ORC (original routing credit).

Also make sure your QF account has some activity every 18 months, actually, every 17.5 months, just to make sure.
No activity in 18 months, and your QF points will disappear.
QF SC gets wiped on your anniversary end of month date.

The reason no credit until flying is that even if one has bought a ticket, paid for, and even if it's non refundable etc you can change or cancel it right up to flight time, so they are not going to give credit until a sector is flown.
