I have mainly been collecting Velocity points lately but due to the lack of good CC offers at the moment I have been glancing towards QFF instead.

What are your views on the different ones, which one do you prefer, QFF or VA and why?

I was looking at the Westpac Black with 100,000 points, but would you go QFF or Westpac Altitude points? I have not looked into QFF so I have no real clue of the perks or what kind of points you would need to do for example F to Europe?

Anyone that can shed some light on this for me please? :)

IMHO, VFF used to be a better program with good availability to Europe flying J on EY and very low taxes. However with the recent changes to the surcharges (it now costs approx $1200 return in taxes) on VFF I think QF would now come slightly in front.

I lean to QF, but only because I think it's a better airline with more destination and flight offerings.

When it comes to CC offers I don't have preference between QF or VA points, each has it's own benefits.
QF points open the door to OW redemptions and VA points for SQ (*A) redemptions.

On top of Westpac Altitude 100K offer there is also AMEX Ultimate 100K QF points offer currently running, something to consider.

Even if you have enough points, scoring F award ticket to Europe (LHR) on QF can be challenging unless you have elite status but there are other options such as JL F or QR F. I've booked the latter using QF points for next year with plenty availability.

Like in any duopoly, it doesn't make sense to close yourself off to one of the two options. Play both and double your chances.

I personally edge to VFF mainly because of the Krisflyer tie up but I never thumb my nose at opportunities to earn QFF points.

My personal points spend the past 18 or so months has been SQ 40.8%; DL 23.2%; VA 19.6%; QF 11.8% and CX 2% not adding up to 100 with HHonors 2.6%.
SQ greatest availability for reasonable value;
DL the best for just having to get on a flight (yes I know it is Delta) and numbers in J no issue;
VA the best preserving cash and at least able to send to SQ;
CX better value than QF with low usage due to only recently starting to use as alternative to YYZ and US east coast.
QF handy over CX tying in with EK to Europe and across the ditch, though the arab airlines late release of reward seats three or so weeks later than the rest means probably have booked ahead using other means anyway.

The main issue with spend based earn is how many points you can generate over time.

i.e. If you can generate 150K per year with CC spend it's better to put it to one scheme rather than two as 75K can generally get about 1/3 as of 150K in redemptions

Its not really getting points through CC spend as I wont spend enough to make much points in a year anyway. I was mostly thinking of CC signups, should I limit my sign up bonuses to one type of rewards only (like VA) or broaden my horizons. Could probably easily get 200,000 QF in a few months but would it really get my anywhere, or should I save those until they release a similar CC deal for VA?

Just a few thoughts I guess. Probably because of the lack of VA signup bonuses at the moment. The ones that are decent I am not eligible for and I am not interested in drip-fed bonus points.

Which have you already done for Velocity bonus points ?

Amex; Velocity platinum, Explorer, Edge, Charge

Nab; Platinum (multiple times)

(+ Others that I am unaware of)

I am also of the opinion that it is good to have more than one type available, if it is awhile before you are eligible for bonus points on one of the above, and your financial circumstances allow, I would take up one of the QF opportunities.

depends on how fast you want to use the points from the sign up bonus

the advantage with both QFF and VA is that as long as you add some points every 18 months they don't expire

So you can then look at the points per $ for the sign up bonus.

may also boil down to how easy to earn the sign up bonus is eg say NAB VA 75K bonus just $1500 + $150 annual spend while ANZ black 75K QF is $2500 and no annual fee for the first year + 2 free QF lounge passes (easy to sell for $100)

Well, I did look at NAB, but they changed their offer from 75,000 bonus VA points to 25,000. If I do QF its 75,000 bonus points.

I dont really need the points fast but I like having them there when I plan for holidays. Next one would be planned in about 5 months and by then I need to rack up enough points for 2 x J or F from PER-London or CPH return. Got about 200,000 VA at the moment, but like keeping a few handy just in case I need to go somewhere.

Would you say the NAB with QF would be a good start and get 75,000 points and perhaps get a one way flight through them? Flights would not be until June/July 2018.
I would be looking at around 250,000 points 2x one way J or 320,000 mixed F+J. Is it even possible to rack up that amount of points in a few months?
I already have Amex Velocity Platinum and ANZ Rewards. Was looking at the new ANZ, but need to know if I get the VA Points even if I already have an ANZ product.

I too would like to know about the redemtiopn rates for VFF vs QFF

I have a QFF program, which I get 1.2 points per $1 for amex and 0.62 points per $1 on visa

it costs 280k points via oneworld and $1k tax for business class, and 420k points for First class

can anyone please tell me how many points and $1 earns for business and first class?

I am thinking of opening a VFF account

thank you everyone
