I'm taking long service leave next year to take the kids back to see their grandparents in the UK whilst my Mum & Dad are still active enough to enjoy their time together.

Over the last few years I've been accruing Krisflyer points at every opportunity with a view to upgrading the family from economy to business for the Brisbane to London trip.

I've researched the requirements, and know that I have to book a B, Y, E or S class economy fare in order to be able to upgrade.

The problem is that I'm looking likely to fall short in points.

I'm going to fall short by just under 28000 points on an 880000 points upgrade.

I tried to ask the Krisflyer Service Center if it was possible to buy a proportion of the points for an upgrade, like Malaysian allow you to do, but couldn't make the lady understand my question.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of this? I couldn't find anything on a search of the forum.

Any advice much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Gadaph

Not possible. Points can only be bought for an award redemption. Wouldn't it be just as cheap to redeem for 3 star alliance business awards, and buy one ticket?

If you have an Amex account or SPG account, you can purchase points through them and transfer to Kris Flyer account.

SPG offers better price than Amex
Buy Starpoints
Need extra Starpoints® for a free night, free flight or room upgrade? Now, you can buy 500 Starpoints for as little as $17.50 USD. Add up to 20,000 Starpoints to your account!

If my memory is correct, for Amex it is US$40 per 1000 points.

Because you have already run up a pretty good number of points why don't you check with your family or accountant/tax agent to see if you could pay a tax bill and get some low cost points on one of your credit cards.
You don't need many and that would be the cheapest way to get over the line without flying.

As mentioned above,

700 USD = 20,000 SPG
20,000 SPG = 25,000 Krisflyer.

2.8c (USD)/Krisflyer point.

To purchase 4 x Upgradable economy return fares to the UK:

4 x 2700 AUD = 10,800 AUD
4 x 220,000 Krisflyer to upgrade = 880,000 Krisflyer

To purchase 3 x Business Star Alliance awards return to the UK:
3 x 150k each way x 2 = 900,000 Krisflyer

Purchase 1 x Business seat return to the UK:
~6900 AUD for Royal Silk Saver
~8100 AUD for Silk Flexi

NB, the above assumes that you can get availability on Thai or similar.

So:

880k Krisflyer + 10,800 AUD.

versus

900k Krisflyer + 6,900 AUD.

Surely the 20k Krisflyer saving is worth 4,000 AUD...

Thanks for all the helpful replies, and please forgive my late reply (I had a work accident and required surgery).

I do have an Amex card, and, strangely enough, had a tax bill waiting for me when I arrived home from hospital, so I'll give those approaches a go, I think.

With luck, I may just get over the line. Thanks again!

You currently have 852,000 KF.

Why not redeem them for Saver awards, it will be almost impossible to get them to London .... but how about to Amsterdam, and then making your own way from there to London. BNE-xSIN-AMS is 63,750 each way (127,500 return) as a saver award. You could try your luck and get maybe 4 seats, at a cost of 510,000.

On that subject, how about redeeming Thai all the way to/fr LHR @ 145,000 miles each?
