I've just returned from NAP where-by my phone was damaged (knocked out of my hand and trodden on before I could pick it up) as we rummaged our way through a busy crowd. The damage was such that it will not even turn on and screen is cracked beyond belief.

The phone was only 2 months old, so I'm looking to see whether there's any purchase protection that may cover this?

I had a look at the travel insurance on the card also but unsure it's covered as it says you need a report. I'm not sure it's something that could have been reported to the police though as they would have just laughed you off?

Hoping someone can help with some ideas! It was an HTC One X so not terribly cheap to replace

Purchase Protection (2.1)
PURCHASE PROTECTION
• £2,500 if an eligible item
purchased on the Card account is
stolen or damaged within 90 days
of purchase
KEY EXCLUSIONS & LIMITATIONS
• Theft of electronic items and equipment
• Second hand items
• Maximum £20,000 in a 12 month period
• £50 excess applies
• Deduction for wear and tear

This would seem to fit the bill better. Would people agree this is the better route to go down?

I had a similar claim this year and claimed it under amex's travel insurance.
no police report required as it was not stolen, but I had to send back my damaged phone.

Best to give them a call and they will lodge the most appropriate claim for you?!

Thanks! I rang and they said that because I was away then it'd be done under my TI instead.

I have a phone interview shortly and apparently they can approve there and then if they're happy with everything and take down your EFT details to pay straight in. Fingers crossed.

Wow, that would be quick if it was that simple ... good luck.

I'm hoping so. Was interesting getting the note from a phone company. O2 was closed (doing shop re-fit), Phones4u didn't want to even know about it () so then tried Carphone Warehouse who were very helpful. Wrote a note and also gave price for replacement unit. Said they have them in stock (and it's 15 quid cheaper than what I originally paid) so I think I'd happily head back there to buy it, unlocked.

It's all been approved, money should be in my account in 5 working days. Very impressed. My annual fee has just paid itself off.

I had a similar issue where I managed to crush my (fairly new) Google Nexus tablet in my J seat whilst reclining... Bit unnerving hearing a might crunching noise :(

Had a smilar choice in that I could do Purchase Protection via Citi (Zurich) or purchased TI through Amex.

I looked at the excess amounts and also the process they needed for a replacement to be given - this was WAY beyond repair (and interestingly nobody repairs these tablets).

I was told I had to send it to an authorised service centre for the manufacturer (ridiculous - kept getting passed between google and ASUS with both claiming the other made them)

Sent it in, had to pay to courier it blah blah blah. So I included this in the claim and they paid the postage too!

Claimed under purchase protection, however Zurich had THE WORST customer experience. Apparently my two plus week experience with no contact from them was apparently their 'fast track' process and I got the feeling this was supposed to delight me! ugh

I've now received the e-mail just confirming the conversation from yesterday's phone call. Amazed at how simple it was. Given how often these type of things happen I guess it's something they deal with a lot so have streamlined the process.
