Guys I need quick access to an ATM on Fri morn Nov 25 - if I remember correctly there is / are ATM's near exit of arrivals T2 is there not?

I think I have seen them but cannot really remember.

Pretty sure there is, but to be honest when I was there last month I was too busy following up my lost luggage to absolutely say for sure! :(

There is a travelex (gulp) that you can get RMB easily after clearing immigration

Would rather drink rancid milk than ever use a Travelex.

I never normally leave China with less than 2K in RMB in wallet cause I always use it next visit - need RMB1,300 pronto when I land and only have 500 on hand - d'oh!

yes there are several (non travelex) ATMS on arrival at PVG T2. There are two situated just before you go down the hallway towards the maglev (if you pass the escalators you have gone too far!)

Thanks! I will need some CNY when we arrive in 13 days time. Need to load my 28 degrees MC soon.

I will be flying into Shanghai/Pudong myself this Friday on the QF which arrives at 6:30 PM or so. I was going to post a separate query about the availability of RMB cash and credit cards generally but this thread will do. I will have my 28° card preloaded with some cash for using ATMs and will also take some Aussie dollars which I assume can quite readily be changed to RMB - can I also ask whether there is a currency booth in the airport which will be open around my arrival time that is not associated with Travelex (sour milk comment applies here from me as well) or have they simply colonised all of the world's airports?? (other than BKK and NRT which are almost blissfully free of them?). I will be spending 10 days in and around Shanghai, going to Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou. Although I was in Shanghai many years ago in 1998 (with USD cash then - and was the Internet even invented then??) I therefore have no real idea what the current real situation is re ATM cash availability in China but naturally expect not to be able to use a credit card at every restaurant I go to etc. Any general update or clues would be most welcome.

Mr Mink - can help you out here.

Are you arriving into T2? The new T2 is the new terminal - previously before new terminal T1 (Dom) and T2 (Inter) were indeed under same roof - now T1 - clear?

Depending on what carrier you are on - most Inter arrivals now into T2 (New).

There is an ATM just prior to entrance to entrance to immigration hall - and there are more ATM's directly outside exit from baggage collection / customs.

There is a currency exchange booth inside baggage collectiuon area - BUT DO NOT USE CE BOOTHS EVER.

ATM's everywhere in China now - most have Chinese / English selection available.

Do not be afraid to exchange cash at your hotel - all hotels are directed by Bank of China to exchange at daily fixed rates - if it's an inter chain hotel - you will be 100% sure - if chinese chain - 99% sure. - either way - ATM / hotel CE - but never Travellex / AMEX whatever CE booth.

Have fun - which hotel you staying at?

I agree. if you have a 28 degrees card there is really no need to exchange cash. plenty of ATMs on arrival at PVG.

Re: PVG T2 Arrivals ATM - local RMB and hotels

Thx Cruiser and others for their advice regarding currency - I was aware that the hotels were fairly well-regulated in terms of having to charge the official rate, but was just obviously needing some RMB cash to get myself there on the Maglev/metro. And as QF this will go into T2 according to my ticket information. I am actually on a J award flight up there, as it was effectively the only way I could get up there for a reasonable duration yet be back in Sydney for Noel and the return of my partner from overseas (Y was not available as an award until the 16th or so). Not to mention the fact that I thought I had better actually better use some of the shepherded QFF points before Qantas spin off the FF program or something drastic! However I am coming back Y via HKG and CX as I have never actually flown them (and QF direct not available in Y).

Thx for consideration of guesting into the Qantas lounge etc. but I assume that my J boarding pass will be sufficient to gain entry to the lounge whether it is an award flight or not. That appears to be the case from searches of the forum -- can someone definitely confirm? My ticket seems to appear as U class (any seat award) - surely I do not also get SCs on this flight as well??

Cruiser also asked as to the hotel - at this point I told the consulate in my visa application I was going to stay at the Salvo (sounds like a homeless shelter!) so had better stay there for a couple of nights just in case the PSB check up on me! Two nights there is around $225A inc. taxes from virtually everybody. This to me seems relatively unnecessarily expensive for China anyway (I have spent 20 weeks in the last year in Europe/USA hotels and have generally been more than comfortable around the $100 mark for hotels). The venerable Frommers guide online as to Shanghai (I am normally a Rough Guide kind of guy) tells me to book the first night or so but then negotiate in person at that hotel or another for better prices less commission. Although I could possibly do this in French I absolutely cannot in Chinese! Any other suggestions for hotels in the "moderate" price range, but not fleapits, near the East Nanjing metro? I usually look at the ratings on Booking dotcom or Trip Adviser etc to get some idea and the $60-70 hotels around there seem to be either noisy/dirty/not up to much - any suggestions or recommendations will be gratefully considered.

OMG - I stayed Salvo one night years ago when it first opened - got a terrible case of food poisoning and only ate breakfast there - can't remember much about the room except that it was very Chinese - don't want to remember any more.

mink I am not trying to throw cold water on your plans - only reporting my personal experience.

I stayed several times at Majesty Plaza when it was Ramada Plaza a few years back simply because of location - but in those days it was listed as 4* but I see on their web site now they are claiming 5* - I stopped staying there cause beds just too hard - maybe they have refurbished - don't know - but their rates look reasonable. Check China Hotel Reservation, Tourism and Travels -- Discount Hotel Bookings In China for hotel rates.

Maybe I was just unlucky at Salvo - maybe you will be fine.

Mink: thx Cruiser for this web site and bookmarked

back on ATMs - 2 x HSBC ATMs just the other side of immigration straight in front of you, between the 2 duty free shops - and yes more ATMs later. 28Deg. withdrawal for 1200RMB reflected in balance on line but not in transactions yet (2 days later)- hopefully no HSBC charge.

Yes staying at Salvo - and as not yet poisoned (breakfast cannot kill you can it??) staying another night. Its about 125AUD a night and v large rooms with sitting room so will be downsizing when I move elsewhere.
