Hi There,

I'm a WP with Qantas, and travel quite a bit, but noticed that about 5 months ago, my card stopped working at the Qcard reader poles. I get "unable to check you in, go to the service desk". I'm not in an exit row or anything, so can't see what is the problem.

Called the Platinum number in the back of my card, and they sent me a new card, that has exacly the same problem.

Checking in online, at the kiosk or counter all works fine, but the poles don't want to know anything about me.

Qantas is so far very unhelpful. Each person I talk to (whether on the phone of at the airport) says they can't see anything wrong and that I should talk to someone else. I'm starting to wonder if Qantas has stopped caring about its most valuable frequent flyers

Has anyone experienced a similar thing with your Qcard? Am I missing something?

I also had an issue eventually, the chip seemed to stop working, but I haven’t flown a lot of late so shrugged it off.

I found my card was very sensitive to the position (rotation, left/right and up/down) and that the card needed to be 100% flat and flush (can't hold it by the edge as in the NGCI photo and need to push it flat against the chip reader surface with my fingers) when used on the poles. After a bit of experimentation, I now get the poles to work right most of the time.

Mine has been very sensitive at the check in poles

Some times the scanner don't work at the gate either or very sensitive.

I have had to line up and get a BP when someone else's has worked.

Try contorting yourself in every position until the reader accepts your card

This is called the QF Pole Dance

"Lets do the QF POLE dance again.."

"it's just a jump to the left..." "and a step to the right..."

OK - said too much, gone too far.....

We are showing our age around all these young whippersnappers Go...

 and I'm worried with a Super Connie for a Avatar?

Hey I still think the Jamie Lee Curtis Pole Dance in True Lies was very sensual. Easy to be sexy but a lot harder to be sensual. Kids today just what to get to the end result as quickly as they can. As they age, they will learn.

Well... surprisingly enough my saga is still going (what did I expect of Qantas?)..

After 2 card replacements, and about a thousand calls to the Platinum service centre, I'm stuck in a loop of buck passing...

On the phone, the people say I should talk to the people at the airport.... and in turn, they say they can't help and that I should call the platinum service centre.

Can't believe no one actually cares about what is "in theory" the airlines most important customers....

I travel multiple times a week and as such is quite a big pain to have to talk to someone every single time...

Anyone has any advise or ways around this?

2 Card replacements? is there something in your wallet/bag or where you keep it that may be frying the circuits? Or do you have another card? eg your Gold card? that'll still let you check in.

This is going to sound dodgy, but one way around it is to not use the poles. I do OLCI, or mobile check in once, and don't bother printing a BP. The card then scans fine at the gate for boarding.

Hi SeetBack,

I don't think the card is the problem... It read ok, but then I get the message saying (unable to check in, go to the service desk)....

When I use the card for other stuff it works fine..

Meadhead,

Thanks for the suggestion... I may try that as a workaround while I keep trying... still very frustrated at the fact that Qantas does not want to solve the issue

Cheers,

Henry

Its not dodgy as Qantas themselves suggest it. And the gate scanners read the barcode on the back of the cards, not the chip, so you shouldn't have any problems.

Agree. It's definitely not dodgy. It's documented somewhere on the qantas web site that you can do this.

Have you tried lodging an official complaint?

Someone inside qantas needs to take ownership of this issue and see to it's resolution. Otherwise you'll keep getting passed around between departments. Making a complaint may be the only way to make this happen.

Totally agree the inability to solve the problem is annoying.

Oops. I didn't mean the work around was dodgy. More that it was dodgy for me to state the blindingly obvious - don't use the pole. That could be taken as an A-hole comment, which wasn't my intention, I was just trying to flag I wasn't being one of those....

I don't bother with the poles, for domestic I do online check in and just walk to the lounge or to the gate. Never had a problem.
