Hi everyone,

I'm new here. I have a simple question.

I've gone into Qantas Frequent Flyer to book a multi city journey. The London to LA sector will be flown on BA and the booking system is telling me I can only check on 1 bag for this sector. The LA to Sydney sector is through Qantas and I can have 2 bags for this sector.

I thought that if you ever flew to the US you would automatically get 2 bags on economy.

Any ideas why it's telling me I can only take 1 checked bag? I'm wanting to pick up some possessions from London and bring them home using the extra bag.

thanks in advance
Allison

Hi sallycinnamon,

Welcome to AFF :D

BA are no different from a lot of airlines these days and seem to be really tightening the screws on obtaining revenue for checked baggage.

However, you may have an out. Are your flights connecting in LAX; that is, do you have less than 24 hours there?

If so then the highest allowance (Qantas) will apply for the entire trip:

British Airways - Commitment to Passenger Service

Free baggage allowance that can be checked into the hold

Find out about checked baggage allowances.

Notes:
i) Passengers will be allowed the most generous allowance on connecting services.

Hi there

Thanks for the reply, I'll be in the US for 11 days so it can't be classed as a connecting flight.

I checked the rules for both BA and Qantas and both say "2 pieces" to/from the US so I am extremely annoyed that they would apply a different rule for FF - have I gathered correctly that it's simply because I'm using a FF booking that 1 bag has been allowed rather than 2.

This whole FF thing is so damn frustrating, I really am beginning to wonder if it's worth it anymore, especially since the taxes are so high these days.

Should I ring Qantas FF to double check?

thanks for listening to my vent.

Until recently BA had a documented rule regarding travel on the one PNR (Ticket) and having the most generous benefit - but this has been removed.

You can always plead your case on check-in for your 2nd bag being free given the Qantas connection. At worst you'll be up for £40.

It's nothing to do with your FF booking - BA has changed its free baggage allowance. The special rule for flights to and from the US has been removed (though, weirdly, if you're connecting between the US and India you still get it). See link below.

British Airways - Checked baggage

It used to be an American rule (FAA ?) that flights to or from the USA always carried a minimum baggage allowance in all classes of two pieces per person. This appears to have changed in recent times. :(

I've just read more on the BA site and I can purchase space for an extra 23kg bag for 32pounds so that's pretty good, will do that. Not too expensive :)

How lucky do you feel?

£8 is the difference between pre-paying and getting pinged on check-in.
