I was looking at the seat map for the Qantas A380 on Seat Guru and noticed that there was no seat 70D, and that 70E, F and G where earmarked as being narrower.

I was just wondering, if anyone who had been on the plane or knows about it, could tell me what is actually in this open space.

The space that occupies 70D is the escape hatch for the underfloor crew rest facility. 71D is slightly narrower since the table is in the arm rest as well as the TV screen.

WOW, I never realised the crew rest areas where so substantial.

Could be a litte bit scary sitting in 70E, 71D, being woken up by someone emerging from the floor of the aeroplane.

I think its only a Crew Rest Emergency Exit, so not normally opened in flight.

The SQ equivalent seats do not appear to be noticably narrower.

There are photos on both Airliners.net and jetphotos.net of a number of different crew rest areas on various long haul aircraft..

My response to most of those photos is... "How do I get to sleep there??"

A seat that turns in to a decent bed (SQ, NZ and NH (F) are the ones I've experienced) is ONE thing.. a proper bunk is something else again....

I believe the South African Airways A340's have a Y seat well down the back with the same type of hatch in front of it (thus excellent legroom according to SeatGuru).. can anyone comment on that? I will be booking some travel for a lanky friend and that seat IS available... anyone know of any downsides?

Yes I think that if you saw crew come streaming out of the hatch, you would have every right to be scared as you would be in some kind of serious trouble.

Rest assured that if crew start coming out of the hatch, the compartment will automatically fight the fire and seal it's self off (on the A380)

If your on the 747 and the crew need to get out, if your standing waiting of the toilet on the left hand side at the very back, a panel from the ceiling will drop and the crew can get out that way

Otherwise if crew are using the emergency escape exit, it's also possible some one let off a nasty  so it might not always be a fire
