Hi folks,
I'm a QFF Bronze status and booked a qantas business class international flight the following year in January with points. I tried to grab the window seat shown in the picture below but wasn't able to do so. Although, I can see that row 1-3 has it seats blocked. I was hoping for either 2A or 2K for my seat in my upcoming flight.

I've done enough research with seat 7A in Qantas Airbus A330-200 and heard a couple of problems due to the proximity of the economy's bassinet. Hence the reason why I am not choosing it. I've heard about the T-80 rule where blocked seats become available prior to departure and that blocked seats are only available for selection to higher QFF status. Is there anyway that I can perhaps select seat 2A or 2K without waiting for the T-80 rule? Any thoughts (especially about why aisle seats > window seats) or comments are appreciated :). Thank you.

Welcome to AFF @shoziqff . I don't think you will be able to select the forward seats prior to T-80. But jump on then and you may be lucky that A or K is available.

I would choose 5F now and look to change at T-80; its pretty private from the seat next door.
Thanks for the welcome :). I'm currently seated on 6E. Do you think 5F is better than 6E? What do you think would be the best seat selection at the moment? It's my first time travelling business. Thanks!

My experience: Take 4A if you want a good seat next to the window.
Take 7A if you want to be first off (they board through the middle doors)
The Even number seats have the seat positioned away from the aisle, good for night flights if you are sleeping but day flights it's a bit of meh. Have a look at a seat map or seat guru to see the diff in the pods.

Couldn't really say, sorry. I suggested 5F for now as it is further forward, away from possible noise coming from behind. The further forward your are, the more likely you will get your meal choice (they don't load enough of all choices for everyone).

Interesting. I don't travel on it that often but last night PER-MEL we boarded from the front.

All things considered I would still take 7A. The bulkhead seats have double wide footwells, making them almost as wide as a single bed… no issues with sleeping and having your legs in a tiny footwell.

I would choose this over an above any considerations of proximity to the bassinet or galley.

I'd take 7F in a flash, it is private from the aisle and has superior foot room compared to non bulkhead seats. 7A is more 'on the aisle'.

This seat map is to scale:

Thank you to all who replied! I genuinely appreciate it.

I've chosen 5F for now as suggested by @RooFlyer, but still very indecisive between 7A and 5F as I am just worried with the following things in 7A:
  • Close to Economy
  • Proximity to the bassinet
  • Last to get the meal served
  • Infant Crying in economy
If all these risks are not present, I would definitely choose 7A as it is like a small private room and relatively very wide. There are couple of youtube videos using seats 7A

Its a very tough decision for me as I really wanted to experience a really good business flight. (Note that it is a 7h flight at 1pm AEST). Would love to hear more people that has been in seat 7A before.

Thanks in advance !!

Out of all the issues, for a day flight I think the bassinet is the only real issue. The galley noise won’t be such an issue as you probably won’t be trying to get a good night’s sleep. I’ve flown in 10K on the 787 and the noise wasn’t an issue during the day/main meal service.

It wasn’t even an issue with premium economy pax walking through the cabin, or with the bassinets just a metre behind.

In terms of meal selection it might not make that much of a difference where you sit… priority will be given to top tier passengers anyway, meaning the most popular dishes may have gone, regardless of where you sit. If there’s something you can’t eat on the menu a quick word to your flight attendant just after takeoff or when they are taking orders might get you a preferred option.

I agree with Mel Traveller that for day time, the real issue is a possible noise from the bassinet seats. If it was night, then I find some ear plugs usually cut any such noise pretty well. So 5 for day time, 7 would be ok at night.

5F it is then - I have come to a conclusion that I'll be seating in 5F for this flight and wait till T-80 to change to a window one! Not to mention that seat 7A is close to the boarding gate so people who embark in economy will pass through you. Thats about 100-200 passengers walking pass you for departure.

Maybe perhaps, do ya'll think I can give Qantas a call and shoot my shot to potentially secure seat 2A or 2K? What are your thoughts on this?

My return flight is booked on seat 4A which is a night flight.

The seating available to your status (bronze, silver, gold etc) is all that will be available until the T-80.

Don't bother; they won't allow you to access those seats until T-80.

BTW, on my recent 7 sector trip, the most-forward seats, available to P1s (therefore not to me, WP) opened up a bit before T-80. For instance, in one case, the T-80 mark was going to be about 3am. I checked before I went to bed that night and the seats had been opened up, so I grabbed my choice.

Handy to know! I was gonna set my alarm for 2.50am!

Cheers for the answer lads! Any tips regarding business class trips? (I know this isn't thread related but) I will be departing from the SYD airport. The only benefits I've known so far is:

  • There is a business class specific for check in
  • Express entry for immigration
  • You board the airplane first then anyone else
  • Lounge
My business class flight is the U ticket, which is the Classic Rewards flight (not too sure if I can access the lounge) though.

Qantas treats award bookings the same as paid ones… you get the same benefits with both, including lounge access.

Express entry for immigration is pretty much a thing of the past now there are automatic gates. Priority screening has been closed for ages, but the queues haven’t been long anyway.

You can choose to board when you want… there is no requirement to board first. You can come down from the lounge at leisure and be last on if you want. There is a marginal benefit to being on early in that you get champagne served as a pre-departure drink vs sparking wine in the lounge. But aside from that there’s no real benefit.

For a day flight you probably won’t be offered PJs, or have them available on request. You may wish to take your own ‘relax’ wear if you want to have a snooze.

7A with a decent set of NC headphones. FYI BYO as the QF J ones are rubbish. Daytime flight, load up your Netflix onto to your laptop incase the IFE isn’t the best selection.
Don’t worry about bassinets etc, not an issue on a daytime flight. More problematic if trying to sleep. If you have never flown Business before get a window suite by yourself.
I wouldn’t bother with anything in the middle rows.

I don't think I will sleep during the flight and will be most likely on my phone and laptop. I currently also have a 16" Macbook Pro but not sure if it will fit on the tray table. I will be probably just wait till T-80 and fingers crossed that seat 2A/2K are avail. I also kinda feel that seat 7A is isolated with the main business cabin and doesn't really give me the "business class" vibes IMO. NC headphones are also a big no for me haha, my ears hurt wearing those!

Thanks a lot for the very detailed info. How do I request for the PJs in a daytime flight (not planning to sleep, but would love to add it to my collection)? And is it free of cost?

They don’t have PJs loaded on the daytime flights

They’re not usually offered, or even available for request during a daytime flight. You can ask, but those they have will be for the return overnight flight.

If they have any, they are free… well… included in the fare.
