I was booking a return trip MEL AKL today and looking at the business fares on qantas.com.au. They were all around $1100 one way. Had a look at webjet and it's showing $500 for the return AKL MEL leg. I call up the same flight on the Qantas site but it's saying $1100.

So I change my location on qantas.com.au to NZ and there it is, an I-class business fare for 500 bucks. Didn't show up on the Australian site at all.

Needless to say I booked the fare. And interestingly Webjet's terms included full refund if cancelled, whereas Qantas' terms didn't. So thanks to Webjet.

EDIT - QF matching EK biz class fares. Great special

Is there any way I can get one of the Business Sale fares just going one-way MEL AKL?

If I look at a return fare ex AKL on the NZ Qantas site I can see a fare of $600 business on the MEL AKL leg. But if I look at the fare ex MEL on the AUS site the same flight is $1100.

I understand the sale obviously applies to departures ex AKL but is there any way to get that $600 fare just for MEL AKL?

Could you not book it ex AKL as 2x one ways and then date change the outbound? That would still involve a RT ticket and not a oneway.

Two one ways is still two one ways, you cannot change the direction of travel without a penalty no to mention different taxes etc.

its a moot point as
1. the o/w fare ex MEL was not the same as ex AKL and
2. The sale has ended.

But if the fare level was the same for the return leg, when booked ex AKL, and 2 separate tickets were issued, there would be nothing to stop you from date changing to "return" leg to precede the outbound leg. This would then make your initial return leg, your new outbound, in effect reversing your journey. This cannot work on a return journey booked on the same RECLOC as the flights would then be out of sequence.

It sounds like you are suggesting booking a one way AKL-MEL and a one way MEL-AKL. It that case there is no reason to book the MEL-AKL one way on a date other then when you wish to fly. There is no point to booking it on the wrong date.

As you say, you can't change the order of the segments on a return booking. You also can't change a AKL-MEL into a MEL-AKL.

What I am trying to get across is that sometimes airfares are priced differently when ticketed in a different country. The EK oneway fare appeared to be priced at half the return fare, meaning each one way sector was priced equally. However, it only applied when ticketed in NZ, so you'd have had to book the flights ex NZ to take advantage of the fare being offered. QF priced the sectors differently. If you booked the fare ex AKL, youd get the I class fare out of AKL but there did not appear to be any I class fares from OZ-AKL meaning the return leg was a higher fare. Likewise, if booking ex OZ, you'd pay that same higher fare outbound but would NOT get the I class fare coming home either.

hopefully that makes sense....

We understand that airfares in different countries are priced differently, it still does not solve the problem of leaving AUS for the ditch at higher prices, most of us are well aware of the LAN goodness in that respect.

Im not sure what this LAN goodness is, so if you care to elaborate, that'd be great.

If the AUS-AKL fare was the same as the AKL-AUS fare, when bought in NZ or as part of a R/T ex NZ then it most certainly would solve the problem you refer to above. The key word is, IF.
