Hi folks just joined up today.

Seen a few topics regarding Amex referrals. From what I see the person giving the referral can make some decent points, but what about the person signing up for the new card?

Looking at the Ultimate card which has a 100k point bonus - is there a further bonus for using the referral code?

Some referral codes can result in higher points though. There are a couple of offers at the moment eg point hacks that will give more points than if you used a personal referral.

Sign up bonuses are nice but you should ask yourself what other benefits of the card you will use? For instance, will you take advantage of the $450 annual travel credit with Qantas? It is my understanding that this travel credit can only be used when booking a Qantas flight through AmEx travel.

Hi @A-Bomb and welcome to AFF.

Yes, as you've pointed out the main difference is when signing up via a referral link (such as through the AFF referral forum), as opposed to via the qantas website or another affilliate, is that the bonus is awarded to a person rather than a commission being paid to a third party. It's a nice way to reward a friend from AFF.

Some referral codes can result in higher points though. There are a couple of offers at the moment eg point hacks that will give more points than if you used a personal referral.
While it is absolutely worth checking to ensure you get the maximum possible bonus, the current (expiring 2 April 2024) referral offer appears to be the same as the qantas website, affilliate websites, and amex directly.

In the past Qantas awarded an extra 10 or 20k bonus points for first time cardholders if you filled out a form on their website before applying for your first QF-earning card, but the last instance of this promotion I can see is from 2023.

In the case of this card, at least you have a $450 voucher to offset the entire annual fee, as well as the bonus points. Other offers, like the ANZ Qantas Black, have an annual fee refund from time to time but it's often only partially offsetting (I believe it's currently $250 back against a $425 fee with the same 100k points in the first year). Black cards also usually have a $15k minimum credit limit, whereas this qantas ultimate card only requires you to sign up for a 3k limit for a 100k bonus.

I'm a little biased towards this card - Mrs Excel and I have held it 4 or 5 times between us, signing up through referral links in all but the first time, which I think was before I'd discovered AFF! But of course YMMV and as with all credit products should consider if it's right for you, beyond the points and internet advice.

Yeah I agree with that. I'm not too interested in the flight credit, might use might not...
Having had a Qantas Amex a few years back, they were extremely generous with point bonuses (eg 5000pts for an additional card, spend $100 on Google pay get 10000pts etc).
Any bonus points are great

Completely agree, there can be some great bonus points offers, as well as cashbacks. They do vary from time to time, but since opening the card in october via a referral link (on a lower, 80k/20k offer) I've received:

- 5000 points for the first additional cardholder (don't sign up for one on initial sign up - wait until the card is opened and the offer comes through)
- 5 bonus points per $, up to 2500 bonus points for spend at Amazon (had the offer twice - once ending dec 31, another at the turn of the year)
- 5 bonus points per $, up to 2500 bonus points for spend at Uber/Eats (had the offer twice - once ending dec 31, another at the turn of the year)
- 5 bonus points per $, up to 2500 bonus points for spend at The Good Guys

Cashback offers have also been decent:
- Spend $100, get $10 back at JB HiFi (had the offer twice - once ending dec 31, another at the turn of the year)
- Spend $100, get $10 back at Myer (five times in total, I think)
- Spend $60, get $5 back at Ampol Up to 5 times (had this offer twice as well)
- Spend $600, get $100 back at Qantas Hotels (also came on the additional card)
- Spend $30, get $5 at McDonalds

Rough maths, have received $85 in statement credits and about 15,000 bonus points over three months.
