I've contemplated flying to Bali a couple of times in the past, but didn't pursue it. Now some friends are mad keen to go and want me along.

From SYD or MEL I've looked at VA, GA or QF. They want to fly QF. I see Qantas only runs B737s, and the return flights are all overnights ... on B737 🤔 🤮 A quick look shows VA has B737s with at least one flight to MEL in the evening and GA has A330s, on a night service. So both better options for someone who doesn't do J recliners overnight (ignoring lounges, prices etc etc).

Not having ever followed the DPS scene can anyone help me, wrt Qantas:

* Do they ever have wide-bodies (lie-flat J sleepers) on the route, from any Oz port? Seasonal, perhaps?

* Or seasonal day or evening return flights, again, to any Oz port?

* Any gossip or announcements even for either of the above in the foreseeable future (ie not "when the new fleet arrives" 😒).

They used to have seasonal upgrades to the A330 on SYD-DPS, but at a quick glance at peak periods it appears they’ve stopped that. MEL-DPS has always been a 737.

All QF DPS services are red eyes back to Australia. If you want a day/afternoon flight you’d have to go on VA to MEL or BNE, or JQ which would most likely be on the A321neo.

If you want a lie-flat nonstop, the Garuda red eye is your only option.

Getting there on a QF 737 is fine.

Just like a long, domestic like flight, in the day-time.

I don't like your chances of a QF A330/787 anytime soon.

So, getting back is the issue.

JQi have (or had) 787 afternoon departures from DPS. The JQi 787 business class is well priced and is similar to the QF 737 business class.

JQ has day flights to/from PER that can be booked as CR with QF to/from PER.

I just did DPS-PER-SYD (2nd leg in J).

Watch this space. Next Friday we are on Adl - Mel - DPS on Qantas.

We are flying back Jetstar - gulp - direct into Adelaide. Departs 11am DPS time and arrives Adl at 5pm ish. That night time departure is always evil.

the short overnight red eye from DPS isn’t much fun. I’d highly recommend getting a day flight back if possible. The daytime JQ or VA would be nicer even in Y than QF overnight in J, it’s 5 hours easily done in Y

Thanks all, so far.

We want to fly together (historic reason :) ) so me doing the common sense thing and going separately SQ via SIN ain't an option 🤷‍♂️. Not doing overnight in a recliner, either.

So, either VA or JQ for a non overnight return.

JetStar and Bali. Since when do they turn up in the same sentence? 🤣 What could possibly go wrong?

Still ...

You mean CS - code share - with Qantas?

How do you get that? DPS-PER on QF site doesn't bring up JQ flights (I thought it used to??) .

Who is this? Has your account been compromised?

You know the only solution for you is Q-suites via DOH ;)

Regrettably, the following also nixes the DOH option ... :(

No codeshare, just mixed classic reward JQ and QF one tix.

Just tell them you have to go via BNE. no QF flights BNE - DPS. Instead they send you via SYD, MEL, or PER. The flex fares in Y can be higher than J on the direct VA flight from BNE in J. In fact the QF fare BNE - PER - DPS with flex + max bundle on JQ from PER - DPS is close to twice the VA J fare.

I did find one of those playing around. :)

The daytime JQ flight from DPS to ADL is actually quite good, not too early out of DPS, I did it back in June, got in early, and it was easy to clear immigration in Adelaide. Try and get the Max bundle, you get a meal included which isn't too bad. I had a tablet with me, slid the cover into the literature pocket and made my own IFE screen.

Rooey if it is OK for the Ette and myself to fly JQ J on daytime flts both ways to/fro DPS I am sure you would survive it - or not.

We went recently ADL-DPS with VA on the early evening flight and despite being a 737 it was still a pretty decent flight and I’d happily do it again.
Coming home we always either head to another port such as SIN, KUL or CGK and get a flatbed home or fly GA from DPS back to Australia. It’s not everyones cup of tea but I don’t mind the GA J seats to sleep in and the food is normally ok.
